WWE fans haven't seen John Cena in WWE for several months now, and it doesn't look like he'll wrestle for the company anytime soon.

John Cena's last match for WWE came back in January earlier this year. He took part in a number one contenders match for the Universal Championship vs Finn Balor, Baron Corbin, and Drew McIntyre.

Cena was unsuccessful in this match, and since then he's only made a few appearances for WWE, most notably appearing at WrestleMania 35 and at the Raw Reunion show in July.

During a recent interview with Sports Illustrated, the 16-time world champion explained why it's unlikely fans will see him in WWE anytime soon.

“Professional wrestling is a wonderful industry, but it’s also extremely addictive. It’s addictive because it makes you feel relevant, it makes you feel important.

"It can fill the void of a lot of things that you may not be brave enough to face. It also pays really well, so you get attached to the financial security.

"It allows you to make irresponsible financial decisions because you think the money’s always going to be there."

Cena's current projects and past comments about his body not being able to handle a full-time WWE schedule mean a return to the company right now is unlikely.

He added that he doesn't want to be someone wrestling and have people notice they're a step slower than when they were in their prime.

Cena said: “The fan base has seen some wonderful individuals look a step slower. I just don’t want to be that person. People like Steve Austin and Dwayne Johnson, they have done it perfectly."

By all means, this isn't a retirement speech from the 16-time world champion, it just means it still might be a couple more months until we see him step foot inside a WWE ring again.

Many fans will say the perfect stage for him to return would be in time for a match at WrestleMania, but even that is schedule permitting for an in-demand person like Cena.

Fingers crossed we don't have to wait too long to see The Leader of the Cenation competing for WWE once again.
