Liverpool will head into the international break eight points clear at the top of the Premier League after beating Manchester City 3-1.

The clash was being dubbed as a potential title decider but, within 13 minutes, the Reds had raced into a 2-0 lead.

Fabinho opened the scoring with a terrific strike from outside of the penalty area before Andy Robertson produced a wonderful cross for Mohamed Salah to nod Liverpool into a two-goal lead.

Anfield was now rocking.

Every time Man City were in possession, there was a chorus of boos.

Those boos were even louder whenever Raheem Sterling touched it.

Sterling, of course, left Liverpool for City in unceremonious circumstances in 2015.

The home fans reminded him of that on Sunday with constant chants of ‘there’s only one greedy b**tard.’

And it just wasn’t Sterling’s day.

He looked threatening but everything he attempted just didn’t work out. He also squared up to both Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez.

And failure to score means that he’s grabbed one goal in his 12 meetings with his former club - earlier this season in the Community Shield.

The frustration was clear for all to see towards the end of the 90 minutes. And Sterling allowed those frustrations to get the better of him.

Deep in injury-time and with the match over, Sterling left one on Virgil van Dijk - a challenge that didn’t even earn him a yellow card.

However, Liverpool fans are accusing Sterling of ‘stamping’ on Van Dijk.

Replays show Sterling’s studs coming down on Van Dijk’s standing foot and many Kopites want the City star banned for his actions.

GIVEMESPORT'S Rob Hoskin says:

It’s understandable that Liverpool fans want Sterling to be sent off. His challenge was out of pure frustration and by catching Van Dijk on his standing foot, he could have caused serious injury.

However, the Dutch defender did make the most of the tackle, jumping up into the air and exaggerating his fall.

How Sterling escaped a yellow card is bewildering but I don’t think that he deserved to be sent off for it.

Liverpool fans will no doubt disagree with me.

But with City facing a clash against Chelsea after the international break, Liverpool supporters should probably be grateful that Sterling wasn’t dismissed and, therefore, suspended.
