How the Premier League table would look if VAR wasn't being used this season

Another Premier League gameweek has passed and, once again, it’s been dominated by VAR chat.

We’re only 12 matches into the season and, quite frankly, it’s getting a bit tedious.

Here at GIVEMESPORT, we’re trying our best to forget that VAR even exists.

Which is why, each week, we’re producing an article showing how the Premier League table would look without VAR.

After each gameweek, we look at all of the VAR incidents from the weekend’s games and work out how they’ve affected each match and then update the table accordingly. Check back at previous editions to see how we’ve reached this stage so far.

On Saturday, VAR hit a new low as it ruled out David McGoldrick’s equaliser as John Lundstram’s toe was adjudged to be offside in the build-up.

Ridiculous.

Then, on Sunday, we were all talking about VAR once again.

However, while there was controversy over Trent Alexander-Arnold’s handball and Mohamed Salah’s goal, the original decisions from the officials stood meaning VAR didn’t overrule anything.

Therefore, the decisions that occurred during Liverpool vs Manchester City don’t feature in our analysis because, without VAR, nothing would have changed.

So, let’s take a look at how gameweek 12 has affected the ‘Premier League table without VAR’ as we analyse each overturned decision from the weekend.

Incident: Sheffield United thought they had scored a 60th-minute equaliser through McGoldrick but VAR overturned the goal after Lundstrum’s very, very marginal offside.

Outcome without VAR (DRAW): Some may suggest if Sheffield United’s original equaliser had counted, they won have won the match after they later grabbed a legitimate leveller. But we think that if the Blades had equalised earlier, they wouldn’t have been pushing for a winner and would have taken a point.

Incident: Chris Wood’s goal in the 36th-minute was overruled by VAR for an offside.

Outcome without VAR (BURNLEY WIN): Wood’s disallowed goal would have put them 2-0 up against West Ham. But seven minutes later, Wood scored again - this time it stood. Burnley went on to win 3-0 so VAR’s decision didn’t impact the final result.
