Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has already fallen victim to Arsenal's captain curse

Well that didn’t take long, did it?

For Arsenal fans hoping that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s promotion to captain would ease the tension surrounding the club and solidify the dressing room, it’s taken less than a week for the controversy to begin.

The Athletic’s David Ornstein penned an article detailing Aubameyang’s relationship with AFTV, which has reportedly irritated people at the club and prompted concerns about the striker’s suitability for the captaincy.

AFTV have become hugely popular for their Arsenal content, much of which is negative, but the Gabon international has struck up a friendship with AFTV regular Troopz.

Aubameyang has invited Troopz to watch games from his executive box at the Emirates Stadium, which is intended for family and friends, and the two have been snapped together.

Arsenal have asked the forward to stop engaging with Troopz but it doesn’t seem as if he will.

In the aftermath of Ornstein’s report, Aubameyang took to Instagram to write: “I just arrived in Gabon and heared [sic] a lot of bullsh*ts.

“I talk with who I want whenever I want and if somebody’s not happy with… you already know 🖕🏽.”

Unai Emery will be glad it’s the international break.

The Spaniard’s season has been dismal and he may have another problem on his hands with Aubameyang.

Arsenal's captain curse

The situation further adds to the idea that the captain’s armband at Arsenal is simply cursed.

Granit Xhaka’s feud with Arsenal’s fans prompted his demotion as captain. Laurent Koscielny refused to go on the Gunners’ pre-season tour.

And that’s just in 2019.

Let’s take a look at the worrying trend of Arsenal’s captains.

William Gallas | 2007-2008

The Frenchman was stripped of the captaincy after criticising his teammates, saying they were “not brave enough”.

Gallas also disclosed details about rifts in the dressing room.

Then, in 2010, he left for Tottenham Hotspur. Ouch.

Cesc Fabregas | 2008-2011

Fabregas was a fine player for Arsenal but he was so desperate to leave in 2011 that he offered to give up £4 million worth of bonuses.

The Spaniard got his wish, signing for Barcelona, and eventually came back to the Premier League with London rivals Chelsea.

Robin van Persie | 2011-2012

"I always listen to the little boy inside of me in these situations - when you have to make the harder decisions in life. What does he want? That boy was screaming for Man United.

Van Persie’s words after he left Arsenal for Manchester United in 2012 still pain Gooners to this day.

The sight of him winning the Premier League title with the Red Devils in 2013, with Arsenal giving him a guard of honour, added insult to injury.

Thomas Vermaelen | 2012-2014

Injuries really started to affect the Belgian centre-back after he was made captain, making just 14 appearances in the league in his final season at the club.

Mikel Arteta | 2014-2016

Arteta just couldn’t stay fit while he was healthy while he wore the armband.

The Spanish midfielder played in just 16 league matches across two years as captain.

Per Mertesacker | 2016-2018

Like Vermaelen and Arteta, Mertesacker was beset by injuries while Arsenal captain.

He made one Premier League appearance in 2016-17 and six in 2017-18 before announcing his retirement.

Laurent Koscieny | 2018-19

Koscienly’s spell at Arsenal ended in acrimony when he shocked fans by refusing to go on the club’s pre-season tour ahead of the 2019/20 season.

The French centre-back managed to force a move to Bordeaux and rubbed salt in the wounds by taking off his Arsenal shirt to reveal a Bordeaux jersey underneath in his announcement video.

Granit Xhaka | 2019-2019

Xhaka’s relationship with Arsenal fans may be beyond repair after he told them to “f*** off” against Crystal Palace last month.

The Swiss midfielder was subbed off to a chorus of boos in the 2-2 draw. He reacted by throwing his hands in the air, cupping his ears and saying “f*** off”.

Xhaka hasn’t played for Arsenal since and there are reports that he will leave the club in January.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang | 2019-

The striker seemingly isn’t pleased that Arsenal have told him to end his friendship with AFTV’s Troopz.

Ornstein claims Aubameyang wants to see if the Gunners qualify for next season’s Champions League before he signs a contract extension but their current form must improve if that is to happen.
