During Liverpool vs Manchester City, commentator Martin Tyler joked that Gareth Southgate had some team bonding to do as England teammates clashed at Anfield.Raheem Sterling squared up to both Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez during Liverpool’s 3-1 win against City.Little did Tyler know just how right he was.As the squad met up ahead of qualifiers against Montenegro and Kosovo, Sterling clashed with Gomez.The Daily Mail report that the City man reacted aggressively after being greeted by Gomez in the players’ canteen as they arrived at St George’s Park.

Gomez approached Sterling, who was sitting down in the canteen, from behind and leant over to shake his hand.

But the former Liverpool player reacted by attempting to grab him by the neck.

The rest of the watching squad initially thought that Sterling was joking. However, it soon became clear that the pair needed to be separated.

Meanwhile, the Telegraph state that Sterling aimed jibes at Gomez, asking if he still thought he was the “big man” and got into the 22-year-old’s face, trying to draw a reaction.

Sterling has now spoken out about the incident with a post on Instagram.

He wrote: “First and foremost everyone knows what that game means to me! Everyone knows that I am not that way inclined and more to the point. Both Joe and I have had words and figured things out and moved on. - We are in a sport where emotions run high and I am man enough to admit when emotions got the better of me.

“We move this is why we play this sport because of our love for it - me and @joegomez5 are good we both understand it was a 5-10 second thing it’s done we move forward and not make this bigger than it is. 

“Let’s get focus on our game on Thursday.” 

Meanwhile, In a statement on the FA’s website, Gareth Southgate said: "Unfortunately the emotions of yesterday's game were still raw.

"One of the great challenges and strengths for us is that we've been able to separate club rivalries from the national team.

"We have taken the decision to not consider Raheem for the match against Montenegro on Thursday. My feeling is that the right thing for the team is the action we have taken.”
