Barcelona are certainly not a club that shirk away from splashing the cash on new players.

While the club's motto, 'Mes Que Un Club' (more than a club), hints at reliance on local, academy products, the Blaugrana have instead flexed their financial muscle on numerous occasions.

In fact, Barca have spent over £100m on three different players, the only club in football history to have done so.

But getting the cheque book out certainly doesn't equal instant success, with Barca's 25 most expensive signings ever a rather mixed bag.

Below, you'll find all their ratings out of 10, with two players receiving full marks.

25. Samuel Umtiti (£22.5m)

Injuries have curtailed Umtiti's Barca career in the last year, but prior to that he was firmly one of the best defenders in world football alongside Gerard Pique.

It's no coincidence that the Blaugrana - with Umtiti at the heart of the back line - were one of Europe's best defensive sides in 2017/18, when they stormed to yet another La Liga title.

Rating: 7/10

24. Neto (£23.4m)

He's yet to make a competitive appearance for Barca, so it would feel a bit harsh rating him.

Rating: N/A

23. Alexis Sanchez (£23.4m)

The Chilean had to make do with a bit-part role for large portions of his Barca career, but he still managed to score 47 goals in 141 games for the club.

But competing with Neymar for the left-wing spot proved to be too difficult and he decided to join Arsenal in 2015.

Rating: 6/10

22. Samuel Eto'o (£24.3m)

One of Barcelona's greatest ever strikers and a key player in the club's renaissance in the early 2000s.

Eto'o scored 154 goals in 223 games for the club and selling the Cameroonian in 2009 to Inter Milan proved to be a huge mistake.

Rating: 9/10

21. Paco Alcacer (£27m)

Sadly for the former Valencia striker, he was signed in an era when the MSN reigned supreme.

Game time was extremely hard to come by and as such, Alcacer struggled to show his quality when afforded chances by Barca.

Rating: 5/10

20. Arthur Melo (£27.9m)

The man tasked with filling the void left by Xavi Hernandez, a near enough impossible task.

Arthur's Barca career has started relatively well since his arrival from Gremio in 2018 and there's surely more to come from an immensely talented footballer.

Rating: 7/10

19. Ronaldinho (£29.03m)

What. A. Player. The Brazilian was the man who laid the foundations for Lionel Messi to thrive, with Ronaldinho winning both the Ballon d'Or (2005) and World Player of the Year (2004, 2005) awards while with the club.

His goal record of 94 in 207 games is mighty impressive, but it was his flair and skill that helped rejuvenate the club. He also received a standing ovation at the Bernabeu!

Rating: 10/10

18. Arda Turan (£30.6m)

So much was expected of the man who thrived at Atletico Madrid, but it just never worked out in the famous red and blue jersey.

Turan only managed to score 15 goals for the club and his style just never suited the Blaugrana, despite him appearing to be the ideal player for the club on paper.

Rating: 4/10

17. Cesc Fabregas (£30.6m)

Fabregas' time at Barca is often underrated. Playing mostly as a false nine in Catalonia, the elegant Spaniard was pretty darn good alongside Messi, Xavi and Andres Iniesta.

He managed 42 goals in his 151 games, before moving to Chelsea in 2014.

Rating: 7/10

16. Dani Alves (£31.95m)

The man who helped change the role of the full-back forever and became a serial trophy winner.

Barca spent big bucks to sign the Brazilian from Sevilla and in return, they received a defender who helped turn the team into the most dominant force on planet.

Rating: 9/10

15. Nelson Semedo (£32.13m)

Since arriving from Benfica, Semedo has never really been a guaranteed starter at Barca.

Often condemned to the bench by midfielder-turned-defender Sergi Roberto, it's still difficult to see whether the Portuguese is a player capable of becoming a mainstay in the team.

Rating: 5/10

14. Javier Saviola (£32.31m)

Despite arriving in 2001, Saviola's fee still ranks high up the list - that's how highly Barca rated his time at River Plate.

The little Argentine scored 72 goals in 173 games, establishing a brilliant partnership with Patrick Kluivert in the early 2000's.

Rating: 7/10

13. Clement Lenglet (£32.31m)

With Umtiti injured, a lot of pressure was placed on Lenglet's shoulders after signing from Sevilla last summer.

But he dealt with it brilliantly, forging an effective partnership with Pique and stating his claim to be one of La Liga's best defenders.

Rating: 7/10

12. Andre Gomes (£33.3m)

Few players have suffered at Barca quite like Gomes. Booed by the fans at the Camp Nou, the Portuguese admitted in an interview that he was scared to walk the streets of the city.

He was just never a Barca player, but he's finally found his feet at Everton. However, he is currently sidelined with a serious ankle injury.

Rating: 2/10

11. Marc Overmars (£36m)

After starring for Arsenal, Barca saw fit to splash an enormous sum on one of the fastest players to have played the game.

But he sadly couldn't mirror his Gunners form in Spain as he struggled to nail down a regular starting role for much of his Barca career.

Rating: 4/10

10. Paulinho (£36m)

The club were mocked for signing the Brazilian midfielder, but he proved to be a huge hit during his solitary season at the Camp Nou.

Paulinho scored nine goals in his 36 La Liga games, helping Barca lift the league crown once again.

Rating: 6/10

9. David Villa (£36m)

While many players have struggled to deal with playing in the shadow of Messi, Villa thrived.

The Spaniard was shifted out to the left wing to accommodate the Argentine, but he still managed 48 goals in his 119 appearances.

Rating: 7/10

8. Malcom (£36.9m)

A signing that never made sense. Fans were baffled when Barca stopped Malcom from signing for AS Roma and their scepticism was proven to be correct throughout the 2018/19 season.

Regularly left out of the squad by Ernesto Valverde, the Brazilian simply had to seek an exit and he signed for Zenit in the summer, with Barca somehow recouping the transfer fee.

Rating: 3/10

7. Zlatan Ibrahimovic (£62.55m)

The man who succeeded Eto'o. Big things were expected of the Swede but for once, he failed to live up to expectations at one of Europe's biggest clubs.

He still managed 22 goals in his 46 Barca appearances, but playing in Messi's shadow really did not suit Zlatan.

Rating: 5/10

6. Frenkie de Jong (£67.5m)

He may have only been at the club a few months, but the Dutchman is making a big impression at the Camp Nou.

The silky midfielder has all the makings of a Barca legend, but given his short stint with the club thus far, his rating isn't as high as it probably will be in 12 months time.

Rating: 6/10

5. Luis Suarez (£73.55m)

A true Barca legend. Since his arrival from Liverpool in 2014, Suarez simply hasn't stopped scoring and helped the club win the Champions League in 2015.

The Uruguayan currently has 185 goals to his name - and 97 assists - in his 260 games and like Ronaldinho, he receives full marks.

Rating: 10/10

4. Neymar (£79.38m)

After taking a bit of time to adapt to European football, Neymar exploded in 2014/15 as Barca romped to their second treble.

The Brazilian scored 105 goals in 186 games for the Blaugrana and was a key member of the most potent attacking trident in history - the MSN.

Rating: 9/10

3. Antoine Griezmann (£108m)

A signing that looks more bizarre with each passing game.

Valverde insists on playing Griezmann in an unnatural position out wide and as such, he looks a pale shadow of the star he was at Atletico. Surely things can only get better, right?

Rating: 5/10

2. Ousmane Dembele (£112.5m)

The replacement for Neymar, but Dembele is still struggling with both that responsibility and his enormous price tag.

One day it may finally click for the talented Frenchman but right now, he's looking like an expensive flop.

Rating: 5/10

1. Philippe Coutinho (£130.5m)

The most expensive signing in Barca's history and ironically, one of the lowest rated.

Coutinho's career at the club got off to a decent(ish) start, but the 2018/19 campaign was the stuff of nightmares. Like Gomes, he was booed by the Camp Nou faithful, leading to a loan move to Bayern Munich in the summer.

Rating: 4/10

If the last three ratings prove anything, it's that money cannot buy you happiness.

Barca's recent transfer history in the wake of Neymar's exit has been pretty disastrous and it's no wonder the club are struggling to deliver - especially in the Champions League - right now...
