Raheem Sterling did not take Manchester City's loss to Liverpool very well at all.

The England forward cut a frustrated figure throughout the tie and let his emotions boil over in the final minutes.

Sterling stamped on Virgil van Dijk late-on and was involved in a pointless skirmish with Liverpool defender Joe Gomez.

Sterling reportedly tried to grab Gomez by the throat before the two men were separated by their astonished teammates.

Sterling has since been dropped for Thursday's clash with Montenegro on Thursday but has remained with the squad and was seen in training today.

However, according to journalist Paul Joyce, Gomez was seen with a scratch near his right eye in the same training session, which is believed to be a result of Sterling's outburst.

Sterling posted a statement to Instagram following this incident, writing:

“First and foremost everyone knows what that game means to me! Everyone knows that I am not that way inclined and more to the point. Both Joe and I have had words and figured things out and moved on. - We are in a sport where emotions run high and I am man enough to admit when emotions got the better of me.

“We move this is why we play this sport because of our love for it - me and @joegomez5 are good we both understand it was a 5-10 second thing it’s done we move forward and not make this bigger than it is.

“Let’s get focus on our game on Thursday.”

Let's hope that both men can put the little scuffle behind them and focus on getting the business done for England.

You can be sure they will both be pleased to get back to their clubs at the end of the international break, though.
