Four years in football is an incredibly long time.During that period, players can go from world-class to Championship level and as such, making predictions for the future is often best avoided. However, it's a hard thing to resist, especially when it comes to predicting an England team for a future tournament.Down the years, many have attempted to predict the Three Lions' lineup and the BBC gave it a go back in 2015.They had a stab at providing what they thought would be England's starting XI for Euro 2020 - which is now only a matter of months away.
- Selecting Liverpool's Team of the Decade (2010-2020)
- Selecting England's greatest XI of all time
- If all 20 Premier League managers had a normal job
Sadly, their attempt did not go too well, with only four players established England starters these days.
GK - Joe Hart
After his calamitous Euro 2016 performances, Hart has just never been the same and now he's now rotting away in Burnley's reserves.
RB - Nathaniel Clyne
Injuries have ruined his promising career. Now that England have Kyle Walker, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Kieran Trippier and Aaron Wan-Bissaka as options, Clyne stands zero chance of ever returning to the England side.
CB - John Stones
Despite his shaky form for Man City, he's undoubtedly an England regular - a solid prediction.
CB - Eric Dier
Ouch. Dier's stock in world football has fallen dramatically in the last couple of years and he's now a sizeable distance from being an England regular - especially at centre-back.
LB - Luke Shaw
He has the potential to break back into England's starting XI, but Ben Chilwell looks like he has the position nailed down. Not the worst prediction ever, though.
CM - Jordan Henderson
An England regular and Liverpool's captain, a great shout.
CM - Jack Wilshere
You kind of feel for the BBC here, because without injuries Wilshere would probably be an England starter. Sadly, those injuries have totally ruined his Premier League career.
CAM - Ross Barkley
A consistent figure in England's squads, but surely he won't start at Euro 2020, right? If Gareth Southgate picks him over Mason Mount or James Maddison, there will be serious questions asked.
RW - Nathan Redmond
What a stinker. Now, Redmond is a very decent player for Southampton, but when has he ever looked England quality? Never, especially not when he was at Norwich in 2015.
ST - Harry Kane
England's captain and one of the best strikers in world football. Well played, the BBC.
LW - Raheem Sterling
Another great selection. Arguably England's best player right now, even if he is clashing with Joe Gomez in training!
Overall, that team would probably struggle to qualify for Euro 2020...
And let's not ignore some of the comments below the BBC's tweet, with people crying out for the likes of Andy Carroll, Saido Berahino and Danny Ings.
Hindsight, one of the most beautiful things in football.
