Liverpool now have a massive opportunity to end their long wait for a league title following their 3-1 victory over Manchester City last weekend.

The Reds opened up a nine-point gap between themselves and the reigning champions, who sit fourth in the table behind Leicester and Chelsea, both of whom trail the Reds by eight points.

With 26 league games left to play, it is still early days. But Liverpool, whose last league title triumph came in 1990, look particularly formidable right now and are head and shoulders above any other English side at the time of writing.

Despite admitting that his side’s form is “pretty much impossible”, Klopp is refusing to let himself or his players get carried away.

"It's just the start, that's how it is, everybody knows that," the German coach told Liverpool's official website. "If you would have told me that you can have 34 points [at this stage of the season], wow! It's pretty much impossible but we did it.

"But now the boys go for the last international break of the year. They have to come back healthy. You saw it how intense it was [against City].”

Indeed, 34 points at this stage of the season (11 wins, one draw and zero defeats) is a remarkable tally.

And a league table based on the previous 38 league matches has been worked out, via Andrew Beasley (@BassTunedToRed) which outlines Liverpool’s impressive dominance over their counterparts since the beginning of the year.

If a 38-game season ended now, Liverpool would have amassed a staggering (and record-breaking) 101 points, winning 32, drawing five and losing just once.

That gives the Reds a 2.66 points-per-game average.

City, meanwhile, are 10 points behind on 91 points. They also have a slightly inferior goal difference to the Reds, having lost seven of their previous 38 fixtures.

Chelsea are 31(!) points behind Liverpool in third spot, while fourth-placed Arsenal trail the Merseyside outfit by 38 points.

Manchester United are one point above Leicester in fifth position with 62 points, which shows the huge gulf in class that currently exists between the two north-west rivals.

As for Tottenham, well, they've down in seventh spot, having lost 14 of their previous 38 matches.

As we go further down the table, we can see that the likes of Southampton, Watford and Brighton are likely to be in trouble at the end of the current campaign unless their form improves.

Back to Liverpool, though, and you have to respect the incredible results that Klopp and his players are achieving.

If they continue playing the way they have been between now and May, the Premier League title will almost certainly be theirs.
