England will reach a landmark at Wembley on Thursday night.

The Three Lions play their 1000th international fixture - 149 years after the team was first formed way back in 1870.

Throughout the course of history, there have been some incredible highs - the 1966 World Cup winning squad, perhaps the greatest of all.

But there have also been some lows. The Euro '96 semi-final penalty shootout defeat and failure to even qualify for Euro 2008 spring to mind.

As you'd imagine, playing 999 games also guarantees goals. But what are the greatest strikes ever scored by England?

That's hard to judge, given that it's a very subjective question. But ahead of fixture number 1000, here are 10 of GIVEMESPORT's favourite England goals.

10) Wayne Rooney vs Russia, 2007

We're starting off relatively recent. When England visited Moscow for a Euro 2008 qualifier, Wayne Rooney scored arguably his best goal for the national side.

Michael Owen won a header which fell to Rooney on the edge of the box and after controlling the ball with his chest, the striker lashed a superb volley over the goalkeeper. Pick that one out.

9) David Platt vs Belgium, 1990

Younger fans will be forgiven for having little knowledge of David Platt, but he was an important player for England in the '90s.

At the 1990 World Cup, Paul Gascoigne clipped a ball into Belgium's box and Platt watched it come over his shoulder, before turning and volleying into the net in one smooth motion. Very nice.

8) Alan Shearer vs Holland, 1996

Six years after Platt's classic effort, Alan Shearer scored one of his own. Once again, Gascoigne was at the heart of it, driving into the box and squaring a pass to Teddy Sherringham.

He then laid off Shearer, who lashed the ball past Holland's keeper to secure an important group victory. Many England supporters call it their favourite ever goal.

7) Graeme Le Saux vs Brazil, 1995

This is arguably one of the greatest goals ever scored by a full-back, let alone and England player.

After a corner is cleared out of the Brazil box, Graeme Le Saux controls it with his chest, before unleashing a thunderous half-volley from 25-yards that looped over the 'keeper.

6) John Barnes vs Brazil, 1984

Brazilian players have often been envied by the rest of the world, but in 1984, John Barnes made even them drool with a stunning goal.

He picked the ball up in midfield, danced his way into the box past six players, before slotting his finish into the net. Barnes beat the Brazilians at their own game that day.

5) Joe Cole vs Sweden, 2006

Another more recent entry comes from Joe Cole in 2006. It's another volley - but this one comes from at least 30 yards! It's hard to justify with words, so check out the clip below.

What makes it even better is the commentary. "Joe Cole... why not? Swinging shot... brilliant. Why not!" Iconic.

4) Paul Gascoigne vs Scotland, 1996

Speaking of iconic, there may not be a more memorable goal - and celebration - than Gascoigne in '96.

The midfielder flicks the ball over Scotland's Colin Hendry before lashing his effort home.

To celebrate, he drops to the floor behind the goal and mimics the 'dentist's chair' while teammates spray water into his mouth. Legendary.

3) Michael Owen vs Argentina, 1998

This is the goal that set an 18-year-old Michael Owen on the path to greatness.

He controls the ball brilliantly inside the Argentina half before driving towards the box, beating two defenders with his speed and clipping his shot across goal and into the top corner.

2) David Beckham vs Greece, 2001

Has a more iconic free-kick ever been scored? We all know the story. England needed a point to qualify for the 2002 World Cup and were 2-1 down to Greece in the 92nd minute at Old Trafford.

Cue David Beckham - the man who had been vilified for his sending off against Argentina in '98 - stepping up for the set-piece. He sent the whole country crazy that afternoon.

1) Geoff Hurst vs West Germany, 1966

There was never going to be anyone else at number one. It has to be Geoff Hurst - but which of his three World Cup final goals are we putting there?

Let's pick the most controversial one - his second and England's third. Some will claim it never even crossed the line. Those people are wrong.

It counted regardless of what anyone has said since and it set the Three Lions on course for their first - and only - World Cup win to date.

There we have it, 10 of the greatest goals England have ever scored. Those all came in the nation's first 999 fixtures - so here's to 999 more!
