Wembley was treated to a rout as England breezed past Montenegro. It was business as usual for the Three Lions as they put a somewhat chaotic week behind them. Off the pitch, Gareth Southgate has spent the build-up dealing with Raheem Sterling and Joe Gomez's bust-up. It resulted in the Manchester City forward being dropped for his country's 1000th game, a decision which didn't go down well with some sections of the support. In fact, when Gomez came on with 20 minutes left, boos could be heard from the crowd.

Yes, really.

By all accounts, the Liverpool defender did very little wrong in that now infamous fracas in the St George's Park canteen, which came less than 24 hours after the pair had clashed in the Reds' 3-1 victory over Manchester City at Anfield.

Sterling has since apologised for losing his cool and asking Gomez if he thought he was "the big man" before things turned physical.

In spite of his antics, England fans evidently wanted Sterling, who was at the national stadium watching on from the stands, on the pitch and it's easy to see why.

The 24-year-old has scored eight goals in six European Championship qualifiers so far this season. On top of that, he's netted 14 goals for City in 16 games in all competitions in 2019/20.

As the 7-0 scoreline suggests, though, Southgate's men managed just fine without him against extremely poor opposition.

Montenegro did cut England open once or twice in the first half but were woeful at the back.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain opened the scoring with a well-taken strike and from there the floodgates opened.

Harry Kane helped himself to a hat-trick, surpassing Alan Shearer in England's all-time leading goalscorers' list with 31.

Marcus Rashford and Tammy Abraham then sandwiched an Aleksandar Sofranac own goal to cap a fine night for England as they celebrated their landmark occasion.
