England’s 1000th match against Montenegro was supposed to be a momentous occasion.

It allowed England fans to look back at the previous 999 matches and reflect on the greatest players, matches and memories of supporting the Three Lions.

However, the build-up to England’s Euro 2020 qualifier was dominated by the bust-up between Joe Gomez and Raheem Sterling.

It led to Gomez getting a scratch down his face and Sterling being dropped from the squad.

That scuffle happened on Monday and we all thought that everyone had brushed it under the carpet. At least the players had.

But the England fans hadn’t.

Because when Gomez was introduced in the 70th-minute during England’s 7-0 win, many fans inside Wembley decided to boo him.

And if you couldn’t quite make it out from the TV coverage, check out this fan footage from Wembley that shows the true extent of it.

Remember, Gomez is the victim in all of this.

After the match, Gareth Southgate came out in defence of the 22-year-old and admitted that he’s ‘hugely disappointed’ in the behaviour of the supporters.

“I am hugely disappointed for Joe,” Southgate said. “Joe had done nothing wrong. No England player should ever be booed when they are wearing the shirt. All the players are particularly disappointed with that.”

Even Sterling had a message for the England fans after the match as he posted on social media.

He wrote: “To all the @England fans, I wanted to leave things at it was but tonight I have to speak again: it was hard for me to see my teammate get booed for something that was my fault. Joe hasn’t done anything wrong & for me to see someone who keeps his head down and work hard especially after a difficult week for him to be booed when he came on tonight was wrong.

I’ve taken full responsibility and accepted the consequence. I felt as though I had to say this get home safe every one #Euro2020.”
