Last night, Joe Gomez sadly became the latest player to be booed by his own supporters.Following his clash with Raheem Sterling in training this week, fans inside Wembley thought it was appropriate to jeer the Liverpool defender, despite the fact he did nothing wrong. It's one of the most horrible things a footballer can experience and Gomez is far from the first to receive the worst reception imaginable.Below, you'll find 13 infamous cases of players being booed by their own fans. The fact England fans crop up on two more occasions is definitely concerning...

Jorginho - Chelsea

Last season, the Italian midfielder was not viewed fondly by Chelsea fans, much like Maurizio Sarri.

During a Europa League tie against Malmo, Jorginho was brought on for Ross Barkley and was welcomed by a chorus of boos at Stamford Bridge.

Rio Ferdinand - Man Utd

Back in 2005, Ferdinand was stalling on signing a new contract at United despite being offered £100,000-a-week.

Flirting with a move to Chelsea didn't help, leading to United fans booing the centre-back in every game throughout pre-season. At least the story had a happy ending, though.

Fernando Torres - Chelsea

Torres' time at Chelsea - aside from that goal in Barcelona - was an unmitigated disaster and it boiled over to the point when Blues fans had simply had enough.

On his 100th appearance for the club against Swansea in the League Cup - which Chelsea lost 2-0 - Torres was relentlessly booed and when he was replaced by Demba Ba, the stadium erupted in cheer.

Wayne Rooney - England

Gomez is far from the first player to feel the wrath of England fans. Back in 2016, the country's all-time leading goal scorer was targeted with boos after a sub-par display against lowly Malta.

The Three Lions mustered just a 2-0 win and Rooney was the target of most of the criticism from the stands.

Ashley Cole - England

We told you Gomez was far from the first! Cole's private life didn't exactly help matters here and when he produced a wayward back pass versus Kazakhstan in 2008, all hell broke loose.

Every touch of the ball from Cole was welcome with boos in what was a truly toxic atmosphere.

David Beckham - LA Galaxy

When Becks decided to join AC Milan on loan in 2009, missing part of the MLS season, Galaxy fans were understandably furious.

He was booed religiously, plus called a 'fraud' and a 'part-time player'. Becks ended his Galaxy career in the fans' good books, though after winning two MLS Cups.

Gareth Bale - Real Madrid

Champions League final winning goals will not save you from the boo boys. On many occasions, the Bernabeu faithful have turned on the Welshman, with one of the worst coming in last season's El Clasico in Madrid.

You can watch the footage below, with the sound from the Los Blancos faithful almost deafening.

Olivier Giroud - France

After being picked ahead of Karim Benzema for Euro 2016, French fans decided to boo Giroud whenever they could.

Despite regularly scoring for Les Bleus back then, it took years for the Chelsea striker to command the respect he deserves. Harsh is an understatement.

Emmanuel Eboue - Arsenal

Probably the most famous case of fans turning on their own player in Premier League history. After coming on as a half-time sub against Wigan, Eboue turned in a true disaster-class.

He constantly gave the ball away and had to be subbed off as a result. Arsenal fans peppered him with abuse and the Ivorian admitted in the aftermath that he cried over the incident. Poor guy.

Mauro Icardi - Inter Milan

Icardi's time in Milan did not end well. His issues with the club's Ultras were well-known and he was regularly booed at San Siro.

Against Sampdoria in February, the boos were as loud as ever and it was no surprise to see him leave Inter for PSG in the summer.

Neymar - PSG

When you spend the whole summer flirting with a return to Barcelona, you're not exactly going to be welcomed back with open arms.

Upon his return to action with PSG, Neymar was jeered and booed rigorously, even after he scored a last minute bicycle kick to win a game against Strasbourg.

Gerard Pique - Spain

A World Cup and European Championship winner with Spain, but his views on the Catalan Referendum sparked mass booing from La Roja fans at home to Albania in October 2017.

He has since retired from international duty.

Philippe Coutinho - Barcelona

Barca fans are not known for being forgiving and after too many lacklustre displays, Coutinho was slammed by the Blaugrana faithful.

During Barca's 2-0 win over Getafe back in May, the boos could not have been louder and it pretty much sealed his fate at the Camp Nou.

That list is just further proof that football can be a brutal, unforgiving sport.

At the very highest level, a month of poor form can see an entire fan base turn on you, regardless of past success.

We can only hope that there are no more additions to the list, but sadly, that is just wishful thinking.
