England’s 1000th match was overshadowed by disappointing booing of Joe Gomez.

The Liverpool defender was introduced in the 70th-minute to a chorus of boos for his role in Raheem Sterling being dropped from the squad for the qualifier against Montenegro at Wembley.

The two players had clashed on Monday with Sterling attempting to get Gomez in a headlock, leaving him with a hefty scratch on his face.

Gomez has widely been praised for his reaction and even pleaded with Gareth Southgate not to send Sterling home altogether.

But that wasn’t enough for some England fans, it seems.

The 22-year-old wasn’t just booed when he stepped onto the pitch, though.

According to the Telegraph, Gomez was first jeered when he was 'warming up on the Wembley touchline as a substitute.’

The report states that Gomez and his team-mates were left stunned and angry.

His fiance, Tamara, was also inside the stadium to witness the hostile reaction with their baby son Kyrie, who had been taken to his first England game.

Other members of his family and friends were also there and they waited for Gomez after the game.

The report adds that the defender was ‘devastated’ by the reaction of the England fans and Southgate sought out the Liverpool man and his family late on Thursday night to offer his support.

After the match, the Three Lions boss said he ‘couldn’t understand’ why Gomez - the victim in this sad episode - had been jeered.

“No, I don’t understand it. No England player should ever be booed,” Southgate told Sky Sports.

“We’re a team, Joe has done nothing wrong, absolutely.  I’ve made that clear earlier in the week, so I don’t understand that.

“Him and Raheem are very close and the whole team are very close so we don’t want to see anybody treated in that way.”
