If you played FIFA 17, you will clearly remember the deadly defensive trio of Jack Butland, Eric Bailly and Chris Smalling.

On the face of it, the trio appeared to simply be normal, above average cards that, with the right amount of quality, could be beaten with relative ease.

But in game, it felt like playing against three brick walls. Not only that, but the two brick walls in front of Butland could sprint as fast as your 93-pace striker.

Pretty much every time you attempted to play Ultimate Team online back in 2016/17, you were greeted with the sight of Butland, Bailly and Smalling on the loading screen.

Overpowered simply doesn't do that trio justice and the fact they were all available on the cheap didn't exactly help out our suffering strikers.

Butland's brilliance was the most bizarre, given that his stats were pretty bang average to the naked eye, with his highest being 85 for reactions.

As for Smalling and Bailly, their sprint speeds of 77 and 83 respectively were key to their dominant performances across the virtual world.

Smalling also boasted 88 strength, while Bailly wasn't far behind with a muscular 82 - a true pair of beasts.

FIFA 20 COMPARISON

So you may ask, is there any trio similar to Butland, Bailly and Smalling in EA Sports' latest FIFA game?

Thankfully, there's not one on the same level. The closest you will get is Real Madrid's defensive trident of Alphonse Areola, Eder Militao and Raphael Varane.

If you are unfortunate enough to face them, pray for your strikers, but Varane's 200,000 coin price tag means you won't come up against them on a regular basis.
