Myles Garrett has been suspended indefinitely by the NFL for hitting an opponent with a helmet during Thursday's game. 

The Cleveland Browns defensive end will not play again in 2019 after being banned for the remainder of the season and the playoffs, should his team make it. 

However, he could be banned for even longer and will have to meet with the commissioner's office before being reinstated in 2020, per ESPN. 

Garrett's suspension is the longest in NFL history for a single on-field incident. 

At the end of the game, which had seen the Browns beat the Pittsburgh Steelers, Garrett hit Mason Rudolph over the head with the quarterback's own helmet.   

His actions sparked a brawl and have widely been condemned since.  

In a statement, the NFL wrote that Garrett 'violated unnecessary roughness and unsportsmanlike conduct rules, as well as fighting, removing the helmet of an opponent and using the helmet as a weapon'. 

Browns defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi has also been banned for one game after pushing Rudolph in the back shortly after Garrett had hit him over the head with the helmet.

Pittsburgh center Maurkice Pouncey has been suspended for three games after jumping in on Garrett following the incident.

According to ESPN, All three players who were ejected from Thursday's game are suspended without pay and will be fined.

In addition, the NFL has fined the Browns and Steelers organizations $250,000 each for the shocking incident. 

Speaking after the game, Garrett said: "What I did was foolish, and I shouldn't allow myself to slip like that.

"That's out of character, but a situation like that where it's an emotional game, I allowed myself to fall into those emotions with what happened."
