The Summer of 2017 for SmackDown Live was a tough watch for a lot of WWE fans.

Gone was the original feel-good factor of the new brand split back in 2016, where AJ Styles, Dean Ambrose and John Cena were feuding with each other, and The Miz and Dolph Ziggler became embroiled in a very personal feud.

A year later, WWE had put their most prestigious title around the waist of Jinder Mahal, who before his championship win in May 2017 had never won a title in his time with the company.

Before that month, Mahal was seen as basically a jobber and spent two years in the 3MB stable with Heath Slater and Drew McIntyre between 2012 and 2014.

But in a matter of weeks after WrestleMania 33, Mahal was in the WWE Championship picture, and what followed was a six-month reign that was panned by many.

Mahal got past Randy Orton and Shinsuke Nakamura countless amounts of times, before being dethroned by AJ Styles less than two weeks before he was due to face Brock Lesnar at Survivor Series.

Assumingly as compensation for that loss, Mahal got a WrestleMania win in 2018 as he captured the United States Championship, but that run was extremely brief and for the rest of the year didn't do much at all.

He's currently out of action with a knee injury and could return anytime between January 2020 and the middle of the year, and when he does return he's got some lofty aspirations - some would say they're unrealistic.

"My goal is still to main event WrestleMania, so I still feel like I haven’t had that “WrestleMania moment” yet," Mahal told Metro.

"I’ve been in the Andre the Giant Battle Royal, and the United States Championship match, but I still feel like I haven’t had my WrestleMania moment yet, the one I’m looking for.

I’m going to keep working had, and one of these years my goal is to have a main event title match and capture the WWE or Universal Championship.

It's highly doubtful that they'll give Mahal another world title run after live event attendances decreased in his time as champion, along with their failure to really break into the Indian market.

Then again, never say never in the world of Vince McMahon and WWE...
