Nemanja Matic called Jose Mourinho to organise naming a pitch after his ex-boss in Serbia, according to The Sun.

Mourinho signed the Serbian enforcer for both Chelsea and Manchester United for a combined transfer fee of around £65 million and the midfielder clearly hasn’t forgotten it, despite the 56-year-old’s departure from Old Trafford.

The 31-year-old midfielder was tasked with contacting his former boss to tell him about the pitch, something which he did over the phone.

The pitch, located in the Kolubara district in a town called Ub, will be used by FK Jedinstvo who Matic used to play for at youth level.

The unveiling of the pitch is due for next month but despite Mourinho’s reported delight at having the pitch named after himself, he is not expected to be in attendance.

However, he is expected to visit the ground at some point, with rumours that a football museum will be added.

The 500 capacity stadium has artificial turf and floodlights and was reportedly named after Mourinho due to the mutual respect held between Serbian players and the three-time Premier League winning coach.

When the pitch is opened it will join a list of sites around the area that are named after people associated with the sport.

A street named after Matic himself is nearby, along with a park named after former Blackburn Rovers player Radosav Petrovic and a stadium named after legendary winger Dragan Dzajic.

Sadly, Serbian fans won’t be seeing Matic in this round of international fixtures.

Matic has been battling to return to action after an injury has kept him out of the last seven matchday squads.

His last start for the club came in United’s Europa League fixture against AZ Alkmaar on October 3, a game which finished 0-0.

As for Mourinho, he has been linked with a return to management with a number of teams but nothing has been confirmed.
