Stefanos Tsitsipas becomes youngest ATP Finals victor in 41 years

Nitto ATP World Tour Finals - Day Eight

The future of men’s tennis is bright as Stefanos Tsitsipas becomes the youngest ATP Finals victor for 41 years following a tough battle with Dominic Thiem in London on Sunday.

His name will forever be etched into the history books after a 6-7, 6-2, 7-6 victory over the Austrian to claim the title in his debut in the competition.

This becomes his second ever tournament win, having come out victorious at the 2018 NextGen championships.

At the young age of only 21, the Greek conquered a legend in the sport in Roger Federer during his journey throughout the competition.

But the final was a tough and gritty affair, with both competitors not being able to be separated in a close first set.

Although, the experience of Thiem prevailed in the opening set, thrashing down a serve to seal an opening advantage in the final.

However, Tsitsipas showed mental strength to come back with a dominant second as he went 4-0 up, benefiting from a second break before winning the set 6-2.

Both men put their heart and soul into the deciding set, with both Thiem and Tsitsipas showing a masterclass in tennis to produce an enthralling match-up at the O2 Arena.

Tsitsipas took an early advantage, going 2-1 up, before Thiem brought him back down to earth by levelling at 3-3.

Momentum did seem to be shifting in the direction of the Austrian, though, the Greek showed such nerve following a fall in the third set.

He came up fighting and showed maturity as he then broke and scored the next point to turn the tide.

In the final tie-break, the 21-year-old made an historic hit past the far more experienced Thiem to claim a monumental career victory as he dropped his racket and held his head in disbelief.

There is no wonder that Federer made the bold claim that the days of the Big Three dominating the sport are soon to be over, with the young and finessed Stefanos Tsitsipas ready to take his place at the pinnacle.
