The 2019/20 Premier League table so far if only goals from English players counted

The Premier League would be nothing without its foreign players.

The likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Gianfranco Zola, Thierry Henry, Eric Cantona and countless others have lit up English football since 1992.

According to Transfermarkt, 329 of the 505 players registered in the Premier League this season are from overseas, which works out at 65.2%.

But how different would the Premier League table look right now if only goals from English players counted?

talkSPORT have crunched the numbers and, unsurprisingly, it looks very different.

20. Wolves

Record: P 12 | W 0 | D 8 | L 4 | GF 0 | GA 8 | GD -8 | Points: 8

Actual position: 8th

Wolves have scored 16 Premier League goals this season, but none of them have come via an Englishman.

19. Norwich City

Actual position: 20th

Todd Cantwell is Norwich’s only English goalscorer so far this season. The 21-year-old netted both his goals during September’s 3-2 win over Manchester City.

Actual position: 11th

Glenn Murray has failed to score in nine appearances this season, but Brighton have bagged two goals through Englishmen: Lewis Dunk and Adam Webster.

Crystal Palace’s only goal in this alternative Premier League table came via Andros Townsend during the 2-0 win over Norwich in September.

Actual position: 9th

Bournemouth would drop down to 14th. Calum Wilson, with five goals, is the club’s only English scorer in the league so far this term.

Liverpool drop all the way down to the bottom half of the table, with just four of their 28 goals coming from English players. Trent Alexander-Arnold, James Milner, Jordan Henderson and Adam Lallana have all scored one goal each.

Eight of Southampton’s 11 Premier League goals have been scored by Englishmen. Danny Ings leads the way with five, followed by James Ward-Prowse (2) and Nathan Redmond (1).

Watford have endured a tough start to the season but find themselves up in ninth place in this alternative table. Andre Gray (2), Tom Cleverley and Will Hughes are the Hornets’ three English goalscorers.

Sheffield United have enjoyed a brilliant start to the season, exceeding all expectations in the process. Three Englishmen have scored five goals between them so far this term: John ‘Lord’ Lundstram (3), Billy Sharp and George Baldock.

Actual position: 4th

Man City may have an array of talented overseas stars but they also have a few talented Englishmen, including the brilliant Raheem Sterling, who has chipped in with seven Premier League goals already this season. The other goal came via Kyle Walker against Southampton.

Actual position: 10th

Ashley Barnes may have played football for Austria at Under-20 level, but the Bath-born forward is very much English and has scored five league goals for Burnley this season. Jay Rodriguez (2) and Dwight McNeil have chipped in with the others.

2. Chelsea

Actual position: 3rd

Frank Lampard is currently working wonders at Stamford Bridge and deserves credit for giving opportunities to the likes of Tammy Abraham and Mason Mount, who have scored 14 goals (10 and four, respectively), in the Premier League already this season. Defender Fikayo Tomori scored the other.

1. Leicester City

Actual position: 2nd

And in top spot, it’s Leicester City!

The Foxes have scored 29 league goals this season, 17 of which have come from Englishmen. Jamie Vardy leads the way with 11, while James Maddison (4), Harvey Barnes and Ben Chilwell have also been on the scoresheet.

It goes without saying that English football would be a much poorer place without its overseas players, but it’s nice to see domestic players shining bright at many of the Premier League’s top clubs.

With Euro 2020 just around the corner, England fans will be hoping the likes of Vardy, Abraham and co. continue impressing between now and the end of the season.
