The Women’s Football Weekend saw attendance records broken across the country as fans turned out to support their women’s teams.
Two Women’s Super League attendance records were set on Sunday as four of the six fixtures were played at the men’s Premier League and Championship stadiums.
Chelsea was one of the teams not playing at a men’s stadium and played their tie against Manchester United at Kingsmeadow. Yet, the home side saw a sell-out crowd of 4,790 set the new record for a WSL game held at a non-Premier League stadium.
Meanwhile, Tottenham and Arsenal featured in the north London derby at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The derby set a new attendance record in the WSL with 38,262 fans at the tie which saw Arsenal beat the home side 0-2.
Tottenham co-head coach, Karen Hills, said that despite the weekend being great for women’s football, weekends like these should be commonplace in the sport.
- Why aren't you wearing your sports bra?
- Muirhead's side continue to run at European Championships
- Arsenal gain bragging rights over Spurs
“This is the progression of women's football. If I'm honest, it shouldn't be a moment - it should be something that hopefully becomes the norm.
“It's absolutely momentous for those women. We want to see women playing in these big stadiums and we want to see these big crowds coming.
“Hopefully it won't just be an occasion - it will be the norm for women's football.”
Arsenal head coach Joe Montemurro was similarly full of praise for the weekend and looked ahead to future opportunities to play in Premier League stadiums.
"It was an amazing occasion, a special occasion. Credit to those planning it for playing on a day when there are not many Premier League games.
"With good planning and good organisation, there are opportunities for us to get even bigger crowds.
"It was great to be part of something and you can really start to see the ascendancy of where the game is going.
"To have the passion, to have the rivalry, to have that tribalism, it was fantastic.”
Across the rest of the WSL, a new weekend record was set with a total of 74,247 fans watching in stadiums across the country. The record means that this weekend was the most-watched Barclays FA WSL round ever.
