Sergio Aguero has established himself as one of the Premier League's greatest ever strikers since arriving at Manchester City in 2011.

But incredible reports from The Athletic claim that he would have ended up at Chelsea, rather than the Etihad, if it wasn't for John Terry.

A decade ago, the Argentine looked 'bound for Stamford Bridge' writes Simon Johnson.

The Blues wanted to make a marquee signing to freshen up their attack - and the 21-year-old was the player they really wanted to land.

Chelsea opened negotiations with Atletico Madrid in the 2009 summer transfer window and were initially put off by the strikers £40 million fee, as well as his high wage demands.

The two clubs were then drawn together in that season's Champions League group stage, where Aguero impressed with two goals in the second meeting between the two clubs.

His performance was strong enough to convince most at the west London club that he was worth the money - most, but not all.

Terry, who had a lot of influence at Stamford Bridge during that era, reportedly told the hierarchy that he wasn't overly impressed by Aguero and cited his 'poor movement' as a reason to avoid signing.

Instead, the captain hoped Chelsea would target another of Spain's most promising forwards - David Villa. Terry believed he was for sale at the right price.

In the end, neither of those players joined the club and instead, the only frontman that arrived the following summer was Daniel Sturridge.

Back in 2009, it was not obvious that Aguero would go on to become one of the best strikers in Europe. But even so, Terry's judgement looks utterly ridiculous in hindsight.

Just imagine what Chelsea would have achieved with the Argentine up front!

Instead though, Frank Lampard will be spending most of the international break working out a way to stop Aguero when the Blues visit City on Sunday - and it seems he has his mate John to thank for that headache.
