The Brazilian Grand Prix could have been a race to remember for Alexander Albon as it could have been his first-ever podium as a Formula 1 driver.

However, it wasn't meant to be.

The Red Bull driver had an incredible race, but a collision with Lewis Hamilton on the penultimate lap denied him the opportunity.

Nevertheless, the six-time F1 champion was quick to console and apologise to Albon following the race.

Footage from the paddock has emerged of Hamilton going over to Albon and presumably apologising for his collision.

Speaking to the media, and Albon, Hamilton said following the race: "I fully accept the responsibility. I fully accept I was coming from behind so I'm the one that touched him, not the other way round."

He added: "I massively apologise to Albon. I went for a move and the gap was kind of there, but obviously it closed right at the end and it was completely my fault.

"It's probably the first time I've come together with someone for a long, long time. I went straight to him after the race to apologise."

With the incident in mind, Hamilton was demoted to seventh, but the British driver has decided against making an appeal to the FIA.

Following the GP, the race director Michael Masi explained that he was set to conduct an investigation and was about to summon the two drivers.

However, a member of the Mercedes team indicated that Hamilton knew that he was at fault and that a five-second penalty was necessary and understandable. Nevertheless, Red Bull team principal Christian Horner was still less than pleased.

"Lewis has obviously put his hand up and apologised but unfortunately it doesn’t get Alex’s podium back, but he can leave here with his head held high."

Horner went on to say that he is excited about Albon as a prospect and is eager to see what the Red Bull driver can do next season.
