Liverpool's worst team of the decade (2010-2020)

Liverpool are one of the best teams in the world at the moment, if not the best.

But, before Jurgen Klopp became manager in 2015, they had gone through a rough spell.

The Reds were a shadow of the team they are now for much of the 2010s.

Particularly under Roy Hodgson, Kenny Dalglish and Brendan Rodgers, the Reds fielded some players who were quite simply not up to scratch.

As the decade comes to an end we've decided to put together Liverpool's worst team over the past 10 years.

GK: Adam Bogdan

Bogdan made a disastrous mistake just three minutes into his Liverpool debut and that set the tone for his spell.

He would only play six times for the club but it was clear he was not up to the standard expected of a Liverpool goalkeeper.

RB: Phillip Degen

Degen was actually signed in 2008 but played a handful of games at the start of the decade.

He wasn't too bad going forward but was a liability in defence.

CB: Danny Wilson

Wilson was signed for a deal worth up to £5 million in 2010 but never lived up to his potential.

He officially left the club in 2013 after playing nine times for the Reds.

CB: Sebastian Coates

Coates is now a decent defender for Sporting CP, but he failed to impress earlier on in his career at Liverpool.

Signed for £7 million, he would appear in just 24 games for the club across his five-year spell.

He did score a ridiculous scissor-kick against QPR, though.

LB: Paul Konchesky

Konchesky had an absolute nightmare at Liverpool.

Signed for £4 million in 2010, the left-back just never made the step up from Fulham to Liverpool.

After making 19 appearances, Konchesky was shipped off on loan to Championship side Nottingham Forest just five months after joining. The move was made permanent shortly after.

RM: Lazar Markovic

Markovic was one of the most promising wingers in the world when the Reds paid Benfica £20 million for his services in 2014.

But he flopped badly. He scored three times in 34 appearances in his first season and would never appear in a red shirt again.

Liverpool tried to sell him permanently for years but struggled to find a buyer. He finally left the club earlier in January.

CM: Charlie Adam

Adam had a brilliant 2010/11 season with Blackpool, convincing Liverpool to spend £6.75 million on him.

They shouldn't have bothered. Adam made 37 appearances at the club, scoring twice.

He lasted just one year before being sold to Stoke City.

CM: Christian Poulsen

Looking back, the fact that Liverpool paid £4.5 million for Poulsen was laughable.

He made just 12 Premier League appearances during his one-year spell at the club and was even benched in favour of Jay Spearing.

That says it all really.

LM: Milan Jovanovic

The Serbian forward was only a free transfer and he showed why that was the case during his time at the club.

He scored twice in 18 appearances in his one season at Liverpool.

ST: Fabio Borini

Borini managed just three goals for the Reds in 38 appearances.

That's pretty bad for someone who cost £10.5 million.

ST: Mario Balotelli

Brendan Rodgers spent £18 million on Balotelli in an attempt to replace the outgoing Luis Suarez.

It was always going to be a risk and it backfired massively. The Italian striker lasted just one season at the club, where he scored four times.

Honourable mentions:

Loris Karius

The German goalkeeper wasn't actually that bad but cost Liverpool badly with two massive mistakes in the 2018 Champions League final.

Aly Cissokho

The Frenchman made 19 appearances on loan from Valencia in the 2013/14 season. He wasn't very good for the Reds.

Alberto Aquilani

Signed for £18 million, Aquilani was mean't to fill the void left by Xabi Alonso's departure. He failed to adapt to the Premier League and left permanently in 2012.
