Liverpool could be without Mohamed Salah for the start of the 2020/21 Premier League season.

The 27-year-old’s national side, Egypt, have secured their place at next year’s Olympic Games in Tokyo, which will run from July 22 to August 8.

Salah is eligible to play in Asia and if he does, he would not only miss the Reds’ pre-season but the start of their domestic campaign.

Egypt earned a spot at the Tokyo Olympics after their youth side reached the final of the Under-23 Africa Cup of Nations.

It guarantees The Pharaohs a place at next year’s Games, and they can select three players over the age of 23 to play.

If Salah can be convinced, there’s no doubt that he will included in Egypt’s squad.

Potential good news for Liverpool is the complicated relationship Salah has with the national team.

He has complained publicly about how he is treated and was embroiled in a fresh row with the Egyptian FA after they failed to vote for him at FIFA’s The Best awards in September.

Salah removed all references to Egypt from his social media accounts, suggesting a possible withdrawal from the team.

The Liverpool forward has, however, congratulated the Under-23 side on their achievement.

Former Stoke striker Ramdan Rosbi, who played for the Under-23s, revealed that Salah has been in touch, although he didn’t want to discuss his potential involvement next year.

“Salah called me by phone yesterday and congratulated us on the qualification for which I thank him very much," Sobhi said, per the Mirror.

"I also think it's so early to talk about the players who will join us in Tokyo, we have 21 fighters in our squad [at the Under-23 Africa Cup of Nations] and they have done amazing job in the tournament.

"Everyone should give them the credit then we can talk about who will join us there."
