VAR has caused huge controversy in the Premier League this season. Not a week has gone by without the system making headlines, largely for the wrong reasons.Mike Riley, the head of the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), recently admitted that there have been four occasions this season where VAR has incorrectly overturned a correct decision made by the referee.“We’ve still got a long way to go,” Riley added. There was more controversy at Selhurst Park this weekend, with Liverpool benefiting from VAR in their 2-1 win against Crystal Palace.

The league-leaders thought they had gone a goal down when James Tomkins finished from close range before half-time.

But the goal was chalked off due to an alleged push on Dejan Lovren during the set-piece.

It prompted fury from rival Liverpool fans, who suggested that everything is going the Reds’ way this season.

Liverpool fan's VAR thread

Former Arsenal player Paul Merson said on Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday: “Shall we give Liverpool the league now?”

However, one Liverpool supporter has attempted to prove critics wrong with a Twitter thread that lists every VAR decision that didn’t go their way.

@SamuelLFC’s thread has attracted more than 1,000 retweets and it includes incidents such as the foul on Divock Origi that went unpunished before Marcus Rashford’s opener for Manchester United in October.

He also mentions Roberto Firmino’s disallowed goal against Aston Villa at the start of November, which was a ridiculous call.

Check out the thread below.

Indeed, GIVEMESPORT’s research into how the Premier League table if VAR wasn’t being used this season through Gameweek 12 shows that Liverpool would still be top of the pile.

So it’s unfair to say Liverpool have benefitted the most from VAR this season.
