Type in ‘Phil Jones’ on Twitter and find a positive tweet. It’ll take you a while. The Manchester United defender has come in for heavy criticism following his display in the Red Devils’ 3-3 draw with Sheffield United on Sunday. And it wasn’t just the club’s supporters who were laying into the 27-year-old.After Jones’ involvement in Sheffield United’s opening goal, Sky Sports’ pundit Graeme Souness said “he’s just done everything wrong”.“Jones isn't a cute player,” Souness added. “He's not 20 years old. He's not got the greatest touch. At worst give away a throw in.”

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hooked the centre-back off at half-time and plenty of supporters will hope that he opts for Axel Tuanzebe next time.

He was at fault for Sheffield United’s opening goal, losing a physical battle with Lys Mousset despite behind a yard ahead of the Frenchman as they raced for the ball.

Yet Jones managed to mess things up even before he was hounded by Mousset.

The defender, once tipped by Sir Alex Ferguson to become Man United’s greatest ever player, was disconnected from his defensive partners who were trying to play an offside trap.

While Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire lined up in a perfect offside line, Jones was sat five yards deep and playing Mousset onside.

The ball was played over the top, Mousset bullied Jones and then John Fleck put Sheffield United ahead.

Jones has been a Man United player since 2011 and yet he’s still struggling to get the basics right.

Worse still for the Red Devils is that Jones’ contract at Old Trafford runs until 2023.

Solskjaer was delighted when Jones signed an extension in February 2019, insisting the England defender was about to hit his peak.

“He is coming up to his 27th birthday and entering into his prime years as a centre-half,” the Norwegian coach said, per the Telegraph

"We are delighted Phil has committed his future to the club.”

A penny for Solskjaer’s thoughts on Jones now.
