Liverpool have suffered some agonising near misses in the Premier League era.

Reds fans were left kicking themselves last season when they had to settle for second place behind Manchester City despite accumulating one of the highest points tallies in the competition's history.

More points than Arsenal's 'Invincibles', more points than any of Manchester United's champions and still they were forced to watch another club lift the Premier League trophy.

But at least Jurgen Klopp can find sympathy in his fellow top flight manager Brendan Rodgers, who also came a hair's width from leading the Reds to league glory.

If it wasn't for Gerrard's slip against Chelsea, the 3-3 collapse at Crystal Palace and some questionable defending, Liverpool could have easily beaten City to the 2013/14 crown.

Rodgers vs Klopp

So, which team was better? The obvious answer is Klopp's current squad and their points tally was indeed greater, but could Rodgers' old team have given them a hypothetical run for their money?

Lest we forget that this was a team with Luis Suarez hammering in a record goal-scoring tally, Gerrard rediscovering his form of old and Daniel Sturridge playing like one of Europe's finest.

And although there's no way of ever seeing both teams lock horns in their primes, EA Sports' FIFA game series gives us the best thing.

It has become somewhat vogue for FIFA YouTubers to run interesting experiments on the game and putting two of Liverpool's greatest modern sides against one another is a fine example.

Enter 'S2G'. After establishing that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's Manchester United could beat Jose Mourinho's, he turned his attention to Liverpool and you can see his selection choices below.

The match

So, it's victory for Klopp's team, but it didn't come easily.

It was actually the 2013/14 underdogs that made the most promising start and while the contemporary defence largely stood strong, Sturridge forced an early save from Alisson.

Thanks to Gerrard dominating the midfield, it wasn't until the 22nd minute that Klopp's side created a chance and astonishingly, it was Mignolet who came out on top when Firmino went one-on-one.

The Rodgers squad continued to dominate the first half, creating two more brilliant choices for Sturridge, but Suarez spent most of the early exchanges in Matip's pocket.

On to the second half now and Sterling hit the target first with a weak left-footed strike, before Oxlade-Chamberlain forced a save from Mignolet at the other end after coming off the bench.

However, the match-winning moment came after 77 minutes and courtesy of an unlikely source.

Fabinho volleyed home with his right foot from Mane's cross at the back post and the less said about Johnson's marking, the better.

Rodgers' team pushed for an equaliser during the closing minutes, but that lapse in defensive concentration proved costly and the final whistle blew after Matip neutralised Suarez yet again.

Final match stats

So, there was more possession for the 2013/14 team, but Klopp's side finally pulled through with a greater number of shots on target and that all important winning goal.
