Gary Neville is not a happy camper right now.

Above everything else, the former player is a fan of Manchester United and it's paining him to see them struggle so much this season, drawing 3-3 in their latest game against Sheffield United.

In truth, it was a scoreline that flattered the Red Devils and it would have been a scandal if they'd secured the win despite goals from Brandon Williams, Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford.

And it was a performance that had Neville imploring the United hierarchy to spend big in January.

Splashing the cash is definitely something you can't fault the Old Trafford chiefs for doing, but Neville believes that Solskjaer should mastermind some final tweaks to the starting XI.

Neville on United spending

"The midfield's just a problem for United full stop, let's be clear about it," Neville told Sky Sports. "Even with Scott McTominay in it's a problem.

"It's a problem for them and it's just not good enough, the midfield just doesn't have good enough quality. They need a striker, they need two midfield players, they need a left-back - they need five or six signings.

"They can't do that until January and obviously the summer but the midfield will not go away as a problem for Manchester United just because of an injury."

How should United spend?

Stop right there, Mr. Neville, we have ourselves a Solskjaer shopping list: a striker, two midfielders, a left-back and one or two more purchases for good measure. Noted.

And it was a comment that had the team at the Manchester Evening News wondering: what would United's XI look like if the club adopted Neville's policy?

Left back

First up, their selection on the defensive flank is Ben Chilwell.

Although Luke Shaw has been hampered by injuries and Williams has been a sound replacement of late, there's no denying the Leicester man's quality and he would be a massive coup for United.

They'll just have to contend with reported interest from Manchester City and the fact that, on current trajectories, it might make more sense for him to stay at the King Power Stadium.

Two midfield players

MEN have made the assumption that Pogba will have waved goodbye to United by the time they splash the cash, so McTominay is the only current player to make the cut.

Their first inclusion is another Leicester player in James Maddison, who has been one of the Premier League's best players this season and was pictured in United gear during his youth.

And Villa's John McGinn could be the man to join him, getting the nod over Declan Rice amid his poor form at West Ham and potentially giving United a Scottish connection in the middle.

Striker

Like it or not, the departure of Romelu Lukaku has left a void at Old Trafford.

MEN threw Timo Werner's name into the ring, but chose highly-rated youngster Erling Haaland to lead the line with Rashford and James to complete Solskjaer's forward thinking vision.

Reports suggest some figures at Carrington believe a deal for the Norweigan is simply a formality and his record of 26 goals in 18 appearances this season has everybody excited.

The Neville-Solskajer XI

Is it the kind of XI that would guide United back to their glory days?

You have to say 'no' at the moment, but it marries very well to Solskjaer's long-term planning and could lead to serious improvements if some of the young players live up to their potential.
