Whether we like it or not, VAR isn’t going anywhere. It’s fair to say the implementation of the new system hasn’t gone too smoothly in the Premier League. Here at GIVEMESPORT, we’re trying our best to imagine our beautiful game without the interference of VAR.That’s why, each week, we’re revealing how the Premier League table would look without VAR.We do that by taking the on-field officials’ decisions in every match and ignoring every overturned VAR decision.

So, let’s look at the most controversial VAR decisions in gameweek 13.

The biggest incident came at Selhurst Park when James Tomkins and Crystal Palace had an opening goal overruled for a foul on Dejan Lovren. It that had stood, it would have changed the game.

Later in the day, Raheem Sterling’s goal was disallowed as VAR adjudged the Manchester City to be fractionally offside. However, it’s since been revealed that the assistant referee actually put his flag up so, without VAR, the goal still wouldn’t have stood.

Let’s take a look at other overturned VAR incidents this gameweek and see how it’s affected our ‘Premier League table without VAR.’

1st | Liverpool | Points: 35 | Points difference: -2

Game: Crystal Palace (A)

Incident: James Tomkins’ opener on the stroke of half-time was disallowed by VAR for a push on Dejan Lovren by Jordan Ayew.

Outcome without VAR (DRAW): Liverpool weren’t at their best at Selhurst Park and, if Palace had taken a 1-0 lead into half-time, we reckon they would have held onto a point.

4th | Leicester | Points: 24 | Points difference: -5

Game: Brighton (A)

Incident: Jamie Vardy’s 80th-minute penalty had to be retaken after VAR spotted encroachment. Vardy had missed the original penalty, although James Maddison had scored from the rebound.

Outcome without VAR (LEICESTER WIN): VAR’s decision didn’t impact the result. Leicester were already winning 1-0 and, without VAR, Maddison’s rebounded goal would have stood to put them 2-0 up.

Game: Watford (A)

Incident: Referee Paul Tierney failed to see Jose Holebas’ foul Ashley Barnes in the box in the 80th-minute and allowed play to continue before VAR brought it back for a penalty.

Outcome without VAR (BURNLEY WIN): Burnley were already winning 1-0 when Barnes was brought down in the box. Without VAR, the away side may have had to endure a nervy last 10 minutes. However, they scored the resulting penalty and added another to win 3-0. Therefore, we’d back them to still win the match regardless.

Game: West Ham (A)

Incident: Declan’s Rice 89th-minute goal was disallowed by VAR for offside.

Outcome without VAR (TOTTENHAM WIN): Rice’s goal would have made it 2-3 and set up a grandstand finish. The Hammers did score a legitimate goal shortly afterwards but didn’t have any time to equalise. If Rice’s goal had stood, we think Spurs would have still been able to see out the last few minutes.
