UEFA's 'Ultimate XI' based on Team of the Year selections since 2001

Real Madrid v Liverpool - UEFA Champions League Final

It's that time of year where UEFA come together to select their best XI of the last 12 months.

Having revealed their 50 nominations on Tuesday morning, featuring 10 members of Liverpool's Champions League winners, the voting has opened for supporters to make their opinions known.

European veterans like Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi comfortably take their place, but relative newcomers such as Serge Gnabry and Matthijs de Ligt are also holding their own.

The end of a year also gives UEFA the opportunity to reflect on some of their past all-star teams and the prestigious accolade dates all the way back to 2001.

And as the award looks to enter its second full decade, they have decided to run the maths and see which players have featured in these XIs the most over the last 18 years.

Would your XI be different?

Now that's what you call an XI.

This lot would romp their way to the Champions League title if they played together in their prime.

Ronaldo and Messi are hands down the best players of their generation, while Henry joins them in a superlative attacking triumvirate as arguably the greatest Premier League star in history.

Meanwhile, there are four World Cup winners in the back four and another marshalling between the sticks - as well as two Barcelona legends pulling the strings in midfield.

And then there's the heroic presence of Gerrard to round off the team. Not bad going.

However, if we were to take away the statistics and focus purely on personal opinion, who would comprise your ultimate European football XI since the turn of the century?
