Mikaela Shiffrin, 24, won her 41st World Cup slalom in Finland, beating Swedish legend, Ingemar Stenmark’s all-time record.

Going into the second run of the slalom event in Levi, Finland, Shiffrin was trailing Petra Vlhova after the first. The Slovakian crashed out in her second run, however, opening the door for Shiffrin to storm to her 41st victory.

As is custom following the race in Finland, Shiffrin received the fourth reindeer of her career. In subsequent tweets, the American revealed she had named the reindeer she was gifted Ingemar as a tribute to the Swedish skier.

"I wasn't thinking about [the record] at all today," Shiffrin said. "Nobody asked too so that was pretty nice.

"I was just trying to push Petra, she's skiing really well. I know she had a really tough start to the season with the sickness, so coming out here and being so strong was super impressive.

"She showed great strength not only physically but mentally too. I felt a little bit lucky with this win, but I also felt good with my skiing, so I’m happy,” she said following the win,” Shiffrin said after her win.1

The victory in the slalom comes after Shiffrin finished second in the season-opening giant slalom in Austria last month. Her result in the slalom puts her in the lead for her campaign to win her fourth overall World Cup.

But Vlhova will be pushing the American all the way to the line as she did last year as the two battled it out throughout the season. The Slovakian came second to Shiffrin in the slalom, giant slalom and overall World Cup events and was the only athlete to beat her in a slalom event.
