Karim Benzema is in the form of his life right now after scoring twice in the 2-2 draw with Paris Saint-Germain last night.

Free from the shackles placed on him by Cristiano Ronaldo, the Frenchman is not only scoring goals for fun, but turning in performances that most playmakers would be proud of.

You'll be hard pushed to find a striker more complete than Benzema in the world right now, with Robert Lewandowski just edging him due to his ridiculous goal tally - 27 in 20 games for Bayern Munich this season.

The Real Madrid striker has scored 14 goals and recorded six assists in his 17 appearances in 2019/20, including four in five Champions League games.

And the 31-year-old's record in Europe's premiere competition is simply outstanding, one so good that he is without question one of the greatest players in the tournament's illustrious history.

Making his debut at age 17 for Lyon, Benzema has gone on to make 117 appearances in total, scoring 64 times and assisting 27 others.

That means he averages 0.78 G/A per game, a frightening statistic in a competition famed for its difficulty.

Only Cristiano Ronaldo (127), Lionel Messi (113) and Raul Gonzalez (71) have scored more Champions League goals than Benzema.

The Frenchman has also won the competition on four occasions, scoring in the 2018 final against Liverpool.

Didier Deschamps and France have missed a trick not recalling him to the national team.

ANALYSIS

GIVEMESPORT'S Danny Ryan says:

There was a time not so long ago when Benzema was ridiculed by many, mainly due to the fact that Ronaldo was scoring all the goals and grabbing the headlines.

The Frenchman's selflessness cannot be understated and the fact he managed a healthy goal-to-game ratio during that time is testament to his now undeniable quality.

But without Ronaldo at the club, we are seeing the real Benzema, a goal machine that will have every defender across the world rather nervous.

With Zinedine Zidane seemingly finding a winning formula in midfield behind the Frenchman, Benzema could emulate Ronaldo and guide Los Blancos to some serious silverware in 2019/20.
