Rivals fans have been dubbing Liverpool ‘LiVARpool’ after the start to the Premier League.Jurgen Klopp’s side have won 12 of their 13 matches this season and have found themselves on the right side of a few VAR decisions. An example of that occurred at the weekend when Crystal Palace had a first-half goal disallowed for a push. However, this evening, Liverpool came out on the wrong side of VAR.Virgil van Dijk was clearly fouled when heading the ball away but the referee didn’t give a free-kick.

Seconds later, Dries Merten fired Napoli into the lead at the Kop end.

It was an incident very similar to the one we saw in the Real Madrid vs Paris Saint-Germain match last night.

VAR checked both the foul and a potential offside but the goal stood.

The French side won a penalty and Thibaut Courtois was shown a red card. However, VAR cancelled that out for a slight push on Marcelo in the build-up

Van Dijk initially appeared to be seriously hurt as he lay on the turf. Anfield held its breath - especially as they had just seen Fabinho limp off injured and was replaced by Georginio Wijnaldum.

But after the two VAR checks confirmed the goal stood, the Dutchman soon picked himself up and appeared to have fully recovered.

Liverpool fans might actually have been satisfied to see the goal given and Van Dijk injury-free rather than the other way around!
