It seemed inevitable that Kylian Mbappe would be on the scoresheet when PSG travelled to the Bernabeu this week.

Not only is it fitting that the Real Madrid target was keen to impress Zinedine Zidane, he continues to prove himself as one of the youngest players to make his mark on the Champions League.

That's part of the beauty of the competition - as football fans, we're treated to watching the best players in the world, young and old, from around Europe.

At the other end of the age spectrum, only Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have scored in 14 consecutive seasons.

That's testament not just to their advanced years, but their incredible consistency dating back more than a decade.

It begs the question of which players have amassed the most Champions League goals by different stages of their careers.

Naturally, the boy prodigy Mbappe has led the way in his teens - but what about for every age from 18-34?

We now have the answers, courtesy of a graphic which can be seen on Youtube account 'Trilogy Channel'.

Here's how it works. Each player's total career goals in the competition are counted together and set against the different age ranges.

18 - Kylian Mbappe

By the age of 18, the PSG striker (then with Monaco) had scored nine goals. Raul had six at that age, Karim Benzema three, Lionel Messi one and Wayne Rooney two.

19 - Kylian Mbappe

Mbappe hit a dozen Champions League goals before turning 20. Raul still had six, while the great Andriy Shevchenko had just the one.

20 - Kylian Mbappe

It's still a few weeks until his 21st birthday and he found the back of the net again this week against Madrid.

21 - Lionel Messi

Messi turned 21 in 2008 when that great Barcelona side were peaking. By the age Mbappe is now, he'd scored 17 times in Europe - three more than the World Cup winner has currently.

22 - Lionel Messi

By the end of his 22nd year, the Argentine had scored 25 goals, four more than Raul at the same age. Alessandro Del Piero had 14 for Juventus and Shevchenko 14 for Dynamo Kyiv.

23 - Lionel Messi

At 23, Messi scored his 37th Champions League goal, racing past Raul's record of 28. Karim Benzema had 22 by that age, Del Piero 20 and Neymar 16.

24 - Lionel Messi

Before turning 25, he had a half-century of Champions League goals. Ronaldo had been a long way behind him at that stage with 21, the same number as Thomas Muller.

25 - Lionel Messi

At the age of 25, forwards are really starting to peak. Hence, we see Messi with 59 goals, Raul with 43 and Benzema with 33. By comparison, Kaka had 23 for AC Milan at that stage.

26 - Lionel Messi

Aside from Messi's 67 goals, there are a number of other interesting takeaways; Thierry Henry had scored 31 times, Ruud van Nistelrooy 30, Neymar 32 and Ronaldo 31.

27 - Lionel Messi

Robert Lewandowski's 32 Champions League goals looked pretty impressive aged 27. But compare that to Messi, who had already scored 76 times. It's ludicrous.

28 - Lionel Messi

There was still no chance of Messi being caught at this stage with 83 goals. Not even by Ronaldo, who was on 59.

29 - Lionel Messi

The Barcelona superstar would add another 11 goals in his 29th year of gracing the earth with his presence. Perhaps he was inspired by the knowledge Ronaldo had only managed 72 at that age. We say 'only'.

30 - Lionel Messi

The big 3.0. Normally an age when players slow down, but not the GOAT. He reached his ton and raced 12 clear of what Ronaldo had achieved by the same age.

31 - Lionel Messi

Now remember, Messi is only 32. There is still time for him to break more records, but the fact remains no player had scored as many (108) in the Champions League at this stage of their career.

32 - Cristiano Ronaldo

Enter Ronaldo. Much like a fine wine, there is a genuine argument that he's got better with age. Before turning 33, he had raced all the way to 114 goals. We can't compare him to Messi, who is yet to complete his 32nd year, but we can compare him to a host of other legends who have. Raul had 66, van Nistelrooy 56, Lewandowski 53 and Henry 50.

33 - Cristiano Ronaldo

Again, Messi could pass him - but with 121 goals for the Portuguese, it's going to be mightily difficult.

34 - Cristiano Ronaldo

The Juventus star is now 34 and for the first time, perhaps he is slowing down. He's only scored once in the competition this season. It's a good job he already has a *probably* insurmountable tally of 125.

With Ronaldo being two years older than Messi, it means the South American has consistently overhauled his European goals record every step of the way.

The former Real Madrid galactico can console himself with being the highest scorer in the tournament's history, at the very least.
