There’s something special about a European night under the lights at Anfield.

We’ve seen some incredible games in the club’s history of European competitions. From St Etienne in 1977 to Chelsea in 2005.

After winning the European Cup six times and the UEFA Cup three times, it’s probably not surprising that Anfield has experienced some memorable moments in those competitions.

And many of those memorable nights have taken place in recent years.

Liverpool have reached three European finals in a row under Jurgen Klopp (excluding the 2016/17 campaign where they didn’t play European football), losing a Europa League final and a Champions League final before winning it last season.

On Wednesday, Klopp took charge of his 22nd European fixture at Anfield and, following a 1-1 draw with Napoli, is still yet to lose one.

So, with help from Planet Football, we’ve decided to rank those 22 European games from worst to best.

Let’s take a look:

22 | 1-1 Rubin Kazan | October 2015 | Europa League

This was just Klopp’s second game in charge of the club - his first at Anfield - and he probably realised the big job he had on his hands.

Liverpool fell behind after 15 minutes but Kazan were reduced to 10 men in the 36th-minute. Emre Can equalised a minute later but, despite playing against 10 men for almost an hour, the Reds couldn’t find a winner.

21 | 2-2 Sevilla | September 2017 | Champions League

Liverpool’s opening Champions League fixture of the 2017/18 season ended in a disappointing draw to Sevilla - the side who had beaten them a few months previously in the Europa League final.

The Reds came from 1-0 down to lead 2-1 but conceded a 72nd-minute equaliser to the Spanish side.

Joe Gomez’s late red card completed a fairly disappointing evening.

20 | 1-1 Napoli | November 2019 | Champions League

Klopp’s side could have secured top spot in their group with a win against Napoli last night but played out an underwhelming draw. The atmosphere was flat, the performance was flat but Dejan Lovren’s header preserved Klopp’s unbeaten European record.

19 | 0-0 Porto | March 2018 | Champions League

Liverpool had won 5-0 in the first-leg of their last-16 tie so this match was pretty much a dead-rubber.

Changes were made and Liverpool saw out the tie with no scares. Job done.

18 | 1-0 Augsburg | February 2016 | Europa League

Back to the dark days of the Europa League.

The Reds had drawn the first-leg of their last-32 tie 0-0 in Germany and needed a result on Merseyside. A fifth-minute penalty from James Milner proved the only goal of the tie as Liverpool nervously held on.

17 | 2-1 Bordeaux | November 2015 | Europa League

Liverpool sealed qualification to the last-32 of the Europa League with an unconvincing win against Bordeaux.

Henri Saivet put the visitors ahead but another penalty from Milner and Christian Benteke’s goal put Liverpool ahead by half-time.

Liverpool’s line-up featured Nathaniel Clyne, Lovren, Kolo Toure, Alberto Moreno, Joe Allen, Lucas Leiva, Jordon Ibe and Benteke.

Liverpool have come a long way in four years, haven't they?

16 | 2-1 Genk | November 2019 | Champions League

After thrashing Genk 4-1 in Belgium, Liverpool probably would have expected an easier game at home.

But after making a few changes, Klopp’s side edged past Genk thanks to goals from Georginio Wijnaldum (more on him later) and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

15 | 0-0 Bayern Munich | February 2019 | Champions League

At the time, this didn’t look like a great result in their last-16 tie with the second leg in Germany still to come.

But Liverpool destroyed the Bavarians in their own backyard two weeks later, running out 3-1 winners on their way to Champions League glory.

14 | 4-3 Salzburg | October 2019 | Champions League

It looks like Liverpool need a result away to Salzburg in their final group game to progress to the last-16 of the Champions League. Last month, they strolled to a 3-0 lead before half-time only to be pegged back to 3-3.

But Mohamed Salah won the game - a win that looks even more important now.

December 10 could be fun...

13 | 3-0 Maribor | November 2017 | Champions League

Liverpool thrashed Maribor 7-0 away from home but were being held 0-0 at half-time at Anfield. But Salah, Can and Daniel Sturridge sealed a comfortable enough victory in the end.

12 | 4-0 Red Star | October 2018 | Champions League

The front-three were unplayable at home to Red Star last season as Salah scored twice, Roberto Firmino scored once and Sadio Mane bagged one too.

They went on to lose to the same opponents away from home, though.

11 | 4-2 Hoffenheim | August 2017 | Champions League

Liverpool required a qualifier to reach the group stages in the 2017/18 season and faced a tough game against Julian Nagelsmann’s Hoffenheim.

A 2-1 away win in the first leg allowed Liverpool to play with a bit of freedom as they raced into a 3-0 lead inside 21 minutes.

Their move for Can's goal was pretty impressive, too.

10 | 2-0 Porto | April 2019 | Champions League

A comfortable Champions League quarter-final tie at Anfield as the Reds won 2-0 thanks to goals from Naby Keita and Firmino.

They then went to Portugal and won 4-1 to book their place in the semi-final.

9 | 7-0 Spartak Moscow | December 2017 | Champions League

Liverpool needed a result to qualify for the Champions League knockout stages for the first time since 2009.

They did so in style.

A certain Philippe Coutinho bagged a hat-trick in one of his last appearances for Liverpool.

8 | 3-2 PSG | September 2018 | Champions League

The opening game in their group of death last season.

Liverpool had led 2-0 before being pegged back to 2-2.

But an injury-time time winner from Firmino sealed a very important win en route to their sixth European Cup triumph.

7 | 1-0 Napoli | December 2018 | Champions League

From their opening match in the group of death to their final game in the group of death. Liverpool needed to win to progress and did so thanks to Salah's strike.

Alisson made a stunning injury-time save from Arkadiusz Milik to send his side through.

6 | 3-0 Villarreal | May 2016 | Europa League

Back to the Europa League.

Liverpool lost 1-0 in Spain in the first leg of their semi-final and needed a famous European night at Anfield to overturn the deficit.

An early own goal helped matters before second-half goals from Adam Lallana and Sturridge to send them to the final.

5 | 2-0 Man Utd | March 2016 | Europa League

Earlier in the competition, Liverpool faced United in the last-16. A Sturridge penalty and a Firmino goal sealed a 2-0 win and put them in the driving seat heading to Old Trafford.

A 1-1 draw in the second leg ensured Liverpool reached the last-eight.

4 | 3-0 Manchester City | April 2018 | Champions League

What. A. Night.

Even before kick-off, you could sense something special was happening as Liverpool fans ‘greeted’ both team coaches producing some incredible - and unsavoury - scenes.

The fact City’s bus was smashed up upon arrival at Anfield may have contributed to Liverpool being 3-0 up inside 31 minutes.

After sucking in the goals in the first half, the Kop end repelled every City attack in the second as Pep Guardiola’s side couldn’t manage an away goal.

Liverpool booked their place in the semi-final after beating City 2-1 at the Etihad.

Talking of which…

3 | 5-2 Roma | April 2018 | Champions League

This would have been No.2 if it wasn’t for Roma’s two late goals that kept the tie just about alive.

Imagine going 5-0 up after 68 minutes in a Champions League semi-final. Just as Liverpool fans were booking their flights and hotel to Kiev, Roma scored two late away goals to make it nervy.

Liverpool went on to lose the second leg 4-2 but managed to hold on to book a final against Real Madrid.

2 | 4-3 Borussia Dortmund | April 2016 | Europa League

Liverpool were favourites to reach the Europa League semi-final after picking up a 1-1 draw in Dortmund in the first leg.

But when Dortmund went 2-0 ahead inside 10 minutes at Anfield, Liverpool needed three goals to progress.

Divock Origi pulled one back shortly after half-time but Marco Reus made it 3-1 with half an hour remaining as Liverpool, once again, needed another three.

Coutinho got another one in the 66th-minute and Mamadou Sakho made it 3-2 in the 77th-minute to set up a grandstand finish.

Then, just like on Wednesday night, Lovren scored a towering header at the Kop end.

1 | 4-0 Barcelona | May 2019 | Champions League

Obviously.

Liverpool had lost 3-0 to Barcelona at the Camp Nou in the first leg and, without Salah and Firmino for the second leg, they appeared to be out.

But Origi gave the Reds a tiny bit of hope with a seventh-minute goal.

The home side appeared to be dealt a blow at half-time as Andy Robertson limped off injured and was replaced by Wijnaldum.

It proved to be a stroke of luck as Wijnaldum scored twice to make it 3-3 on aggregate.

Then, the famous ‘CORNER TAKEN QUICKLY’ as Origi made it 4-0 with 10 minutes left.

Perhaps the greatest European night in Anfield history.

It was made even better by the fact Liverpool went on to win the final in Madrid against Tottenham.

Twenty-two European home games for Klopp and zero defeats is an incredible record.

With that kind of record, it’s no wonder the German hasn’t failed to lead his side to a final in the three seasons they’ve competed in European football.

Of course, their away record could do with some improvement with the Reds winning just one away group stage match in two seasons.

But if the club can maintain their unbeaten record at home, they’ll have a fantastic chance of making it four European finals in five years.
