Granit Xhaka made his first appearance for Arsenal in over a month against Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday evening. The Swiss midfielder was stripped of the captaincy by Unai Emery earlier this month following his reaction to being booed in the Gunners’ 2-2 draw against Crystal Palace.Arsenal fans jeered Xhaka, who responded by telling the Emirates crowd to ‘f*** off’ and subsequently lost the captain’s armband, which is now occupied by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. It was unclear whether we’d ever see the 27-year-old in an Arsenal shirt again. Speculation is rife that Xhaka will move on to another club when the transfer window opens in January. But the under-fire Emery brought Xhaka back into the starting line-up to face Eintracht Frankfurt.

Xhaka’s reception was reasonably warm from the Arsenal fans as his name was announced prior to kick-off on Thursday.

But the midfielder was unable to prevent Arsenal slumping to another hugely disappointing result.

A 2-1 defeat piles more pressure onto the already heavily-weighted down shoulders of Emery, who could find himself out of a job very soon.

Arsenal fans were left fuming with Emery, who they are now desperate to see leave the Emirates as soon as possible, although the reaction of Xhaka at the full-time whistle also infuriated Gunners’ supporters on social media.

Shortly after the full-time whistle was blown, Arsenal fans were appalled to see Xhaka laughing and smiling with a few opponents.

Let’s be honest: that’s not a great look, is it?

This is your first game back for weeks after falling out with the Arsenal fans and it’s important that you make a positive impression.

You’ve failed to prevent your team losing at home to Eintracht Frankfurt and then you have a laugh with a couple of opposition players while still on the pitch.

Think, Granit!

Needless to say, the backlash on social media has been rather fierce…

If this turns out to be the final Arsenal game for both Emery and Xhaka, it wouldn’t be a huge shock.

Arsenal, who haven’t won a game since beating Vitoria Guimaraes on October 24, face Norwich City at Carrow Road this Sunday.
