Not one Barcelona player stood out in their stunning 4-0 defeat to Liverpool last May but the evening was a particularly torrid affair for Jordi Alba.

The Spanish left-back made mistakes that led to Liverpool’s first two goals as the Reds secured a remarkable comeback from 3-0 down to reach the Champions League final.

Alba was given a three out of 10 score in ESPN’s player ratings and was left to reflect on a remarkable collapse.

Barcelona’s 2018/19 season has been documented in the eight-episode show ‘Matchday’, which follows key matches the Blaugrana were involved in last season.

And in the penultimate episode, we see behind-the-scenes footage of that game at Anfield.

One scene that stands out comes at half-time.

Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde is delivering his message to his players when he suddenly stops and looks towards Alba, who has his head in his towel and needs comforting.

Alba is asked if he's okay and he then says to Valverde: "Go on, go on," before putting his head back into his towel.

It's remarkable. 

Alba was visibly distraught, despite Barcelona still being in a relatively comfortable position at 1-0 down on the night.

But after seeing what state he was in, you have to wonder why Alba continued. 

He had already made a mistake that led to Liverpool's first goal and eight minutes after the interval, he was responsible for giving away the ball before Jurgen Klopp's side made it 2-0.

We all know what happened after that.

Liverpool's comeback, sealed through Divock Origi's late goal, was a disaster for Barcelona and could leave wounds that are never repaired.

Alba is 30 years old and Barcelona don't look like they can compete for the Champions League this season.

If he never wins the tournament again in his career, the defeat to Liverpool will sting even more.

Was Alba ill?

To look that distressed at half-time of a huge game, while Barcelona were still favourites to progress, is very odd.

It's easy to ask whether Valverde should have replaced Alba at half-time after seeing his reaction but the Barcelona boss probably didn't think too much of it.

After all, he has played in huge matches before, and Alba should have been one of the players Valverde could have counted on to rally his teammates.

Instead, he looked crestfallen, as if he wasn't mentally ready to play 45 more minutes. 

It's really remarkable.
