Liverpool have gone 11 points clear at the top of the table after beating Brighton & Hove Albion 2-1 on Saturday afternoon. But they did it the hard way as Alisson Becker was sent off for a moment of madness with 13 minutes remaining.Liverpool were the better team from the first whistle and took the lead through Virgil van Dijk after 18 minutes. The Dutchman latched onto a ball into the box from Trent Alexander-Arnold to score his first goal of the season. And the two would combine once again six minutes later.

Alexander-Arnold whipped in a corner and Van Dijk leapt highest once again to head home.

The Reds looked to be cruising to a win until Alisson got sent off in remarkable circumstances.

The Brazilian goalkeeper came steaming out of his box and was in no mans land as Leandro Trossard ran at goal.

The Frenchman poked the ball over Alisson and he felt the need to handle the ball to stop it from going past him.

He was rightfully given his marching orders by referee Martin Atkinson.

Oh dear Alisson. What were you thinking.

The former Roma man is arguably the best goalkeeper in the world but that is a disastrous error.

That is the first time he has been sent off in his professional career. He will now miss Liverpool's game against Everton in midweek.

And it went from bad to worse when Lewis Dunk caught Liverpool out from the resulting free-kick.

Adrian was lining up his wall when Brighton took a quick free-kick. Liverpool's players protested but the goal was allowed to stand.

It made for a nervy final 10 minutes.

Adrian nearly gifted Brighton an equaliser late on when he spilled a long range shot, but he was just able to jump on the ball in time.

And Liverpool held firm to win 2-1. What a mad second half at Anfield.

It's a big three points for Liverpool, who have managed to extend their 14-game unbeaten run in the Premier League.

But Alisson's red card could prove costly when they take on their fierce rivals at Anfield on Wednesday.
