Juventus' Gianluigi Buffon is starting to show all 41 of his years. For season after season in the 2010s, Buffon looked to prove that age was just a number and played superbly as the Old Lady reached Champions League finals in 2015 and 2017.And by the time he decided to wave goodbye to the club in 2018, it looked to be perfect timing and would afford him the luxury of a few victory lap appearances for Paris Saint-Germain.However, Buffon instead decided to return to Juventus this summer and you felt as though there was more quiet concern than joy when the news was announced. Many wondered whether he would even earn game time over Wojciech Szczesny, but Buffon has in fact been trusted with five starts already this season.

Buffon struggles vs Sassuolo

And while those early outings largely passed without incident, the World Cup winner suffered an afternoon to forget upon Sassuolo's visit to the Allianz Stadium.

The visitors quickly equalised through Jeremie Boga after Leonardo Bonucci's opener, ruthlessly lobbing Buffon with a chip after going one-on-one.

It wasn't an error from the Juventus goalkeeper, but it wasn't exactly a proud moment either.

Sassuolo's second goal, however, was most certainly a mistake from Buffon and transpired after summer signing Matthijs de Ligt scuffed a clearance on the edge of the penalty area.

The ball found it's way to Francesco Caputo who, despite completely scuffing his volley, found the the net after Buffon made a complete hash of his dive, allowing the shot to bounce over him.

Slammed on Twitter

As a result, there were plenty of football fans calling for him to hang up his gloves on Twitter. Check out some of the responses down below.

GIVEMESPORT's Kobe Tong says

Whether you like to admit it or not, Buffon hasn't looked anywhere near his best over the last few seasons.

Is he still in the top 20 or 30 goalkeepers in the world? Probably, but you have to wonder why Maurizio Sarri bothers playing him above Szcesny during important league games.

Just because the Pole isn't as good as a prime Buffon and will never match the Italian's legacy, it doesn't mean he isn't far better at present and deserves more in the way of backing.

The way I see it, Buffon should have stayed away from Juventus after his original departure and slept soundly in the knowledge that he never really showed his age in Turin.

Sure, even a glut of errors this season couldn't tarnish his legacy, but the 41-year-old should either call it a day or move away from the top European leagues that are starting to prove too tough.
