Reigning world champion Lewis Hamilton is now just eight wins away from breaking Formula 1 great Michael Schumacher’s all-time Grand Prix wins record following today’s win in Abu Dhabi. The record currently stands at 91, and following another dominate victory, where Hamilton led the race from start to finish, the 34-year-old Brit now currently sits on 84 wins.In total this season, the Mercedes driver won 11 of the 21 races that demonstrate what a successful campaign it has been for the Brit. The six-time world champion has now matched his previous best performances in terms of wins in a single season from 2014 and 2018, where he got the better of his then teammate, 2016 World Champion Nico Rosberg, and current rival Sebastian Vettel respectively. The Mercedes number one racer will have the opportunity next year of matching another record that the German set, the number of World Championships, which currently stands at seven.

This is something few would bet against on his current form.

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff said: “If we’re able to provide the drivers with a good car next year, that is competitive, we continue to work on the gaps we still have, try and minimise the mistakes and he has a good season, there is no reason why he couldn’t go for a seventh title.”

Following the conclusion of the 2019 season, there will be some testing in Abu Dhabi before preparations begin in earnest for the start of next season that begins in Australia on March 13-15, 2020.

It could be a record-breaking and record-equalling year for Lewis Hamilton.

Who knows, maybe he'll start getting the appreciation he deserves as well.
