How the Premier League table would look if VAR wasn't being used this season

Following Saturday’s Premier League action, it looked as though we were going to have a gameweek without it being dominated by VAR.

The only incident that was overturned by VAR was when Michail Antonio’s goal against Chelsea was ruled out after replays showed the ball had struck the West Ham man’s hand.

Of course, Southampton's equaliser against Watford should have been overturned by VAR for Moussa Djenepo's handball but it wasn't spotted.

However, Sunday's football was dominated by VAR.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was allowed to re-take a penalty during Norwich vs Arsenal after VAR spotted encroachment. It helped the Gunners claim a 2-2 draw.

And Leicester’s dramatic 2-1 victory over Everton was heavily influenced by VAR.

First, Ben Chilwell thought he had won a penalty until it was overturned.

Then, in the 94th-minute, Kelechi Iheanacho scored a winner for the home side. The assistant referee initially flagged for offside but it was overturned prompting crazy celebrations at the King Power Stadium.

It was an example of VAR working to perfection.

We still don’t like it, though.

And that’s why, every week, we attempt to ignore it completely and produce our very own ‘Premier League table without VAR.’

Each week, we look at overturned VAR decisions and speculate how each one has impacted that match in question.

We, therefore, adjust our table accordingly and this is how it looks after gameweek 14:

Incident 1: Ben Chilwell went down in the box under Djibril Sidibe’s challenge in the 34th-minute and Graham Scott pointed to the penalty spot. But replays showed there was no contact and VAR ruled it out.

Incident 2: Kelechi Iheanacho’s 94th-minute winner was incorrectly flagged offside by the assistant referee before VAR overruled it and handed Leicester the win.

Outcome without VAR (LEICESTER WIN): If Leicester had scored their 34th-minute penalty to equalise, we fancy they would have gone on to beat Everton.

Game: West Ham (H)

Incident: It looked as though Michail Antonio had put West Ham 2-0 up in the 69th-minute at Stamford Bridge but VAR identified a handball from the Hammer.

Outcome without VAR (WEST HAM WIN): A second goal would have made for a more comfortable final 20 minutes for West Ham but they held on for a 1-0 win, so would have won if Antonio’s goal had stood.

Incident: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s 29th-minute penalty was saved by Tim Krul but VAR allowed him to retake it after encroachment from Norwich defenders.

Outcome without VAR (NORWICH WIN): This is a tough one to predict the outcome but we’re giving Norwich the win if Aubameyang’s equaliser didn’t count. Aubameyang scored from the retaken penalty and Arsenal eventually earned a 2-2 draw. But Norwich were the better side and we think they would have earned all three points without the involvement of VAR.
