Ten years ago, Manchester United’s squad boasted some brilliant players.

Their 2009/10 squad included Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Luis Nani - and they had just said goodbye to Cristiano Ronaldo.

But today, United’s team no longer strikes fear into the opposition.

Aston Villa were not afraid of a team that featured Andreas Pereira and Fred in midfield.

With the score at 2-2, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer turned to Jesse Lingard to change things from the bench.

Despite spending hundreds of millions of pounds in recent years, the Red Devils still aren’t in a position to compete for the biggest trophies.

And, of course, they will be linked with a swath of new players in the January transfer window.

ANALYSIS

GIVEMESPORT’s Scott Wilson says:

There aren’t too many surprises among the results.

Fans want to see Mata sold and after his ineffectiveness performance against Aston Villa, it’s not hard to see why.

I’m surprised that Smalling is only considered a Squad Player when his performances on loan at AS Roma have been first class, although that’s probably based on his showings when he was at Old Trafford.

The fact that £52 million Fred hasn’t earned a status as a Starter says a lot about his disappointing time in England.
