Lionel Messi picked up a record-breaking sixth Ballon d'Or trophy on Monday night. That meant disappointment for Liverpool defender, Virgil van Dijk. The Dutchman had a superb 2019 as he helped his side to the Champions League title. But that was not enough as he came agonisingly close to lifting the trophy himself.Messi beat Van Dijk by just seven points. The Argentine finished on 686 points compared to Van Dijk's total of 679.

While nearly all Liverpool fans will be unhappy with the result, one supporter of the Merseyside club has gone a step further.

Will called into talkSPORT on Monday night to vent his frustration at the result.

He began by questioning Messi's decision to play his whole career in Spain.

“Messi is a great player, but he’s only done it in LaLiga,” he said.

“He’s only done it in a league where really there are only two teams involved; it’s like Scotland with Celtic and Rangers.

“I’d love to see how good he is in the Premier League, because when he faced Liverpool last season he did diddly-squat."

Will then claimed Van Dijk was a more worthy winner of the award.

“For winning the Champions League and the effect he’s had at Liverpool, Van Dijk should have won the Ballon d’Or,” he continued.

The Liverpool fan then claimed Messi was overrated and said Ronaldo was better.

“Messi is overrated. I think Cristiano Ronaldo, and this is from a Liverpool fan, I think Ronaldo is such a better player than because he’s done it in different leagues.

“It makes him a better footballer because he can adapt his style depending on the league he plays in.

“Messi is the best player who has ever played in LaLiga, and that is it."

And he was also asked whether he would swap Mohamed Salah for Messi.

He replied: “Would I swap Mo Salah for Messi? No not at all. He’s a cry baby as well!”

Wow. It's possible that you could argue that Van Dijk deserved the Ballon d'Or over Messi.

There's also an argument that Ronaldo has been better than Messi over the years.

But to say that Messi is overrated is downright absurd. He's scored 625 goals in 733 and has won everything there is to win in football.

And to say that he wouldn't swap Salah for Messi is ridiculous. Of course, Salah is a brilliant player and he's done some great things for Liverpool.

But Messi is in a completely different league. Only the most passionate of Liverpool fan's, like Will, would argue otherwise.
