Jose Mourinho's return to Manchester United was his first real test as Tottenham manager, but it was one in which his players disappointed in a 2-1 defeat. The Red Devils ensured there would be no revenge for the Portuguese 12 months on from his sacking as Marcus Rashford scored a brace.Paulo Gazzaniga should have done better at his near post for the opener, though Spurs went in level at half-time thanks to an exquisite flick and finish from Dele Alli.United had been good value for their lead, though, and it was restored almost immediately in the second half after Moussa Sissoko brought down Rashford in the box and the England striker converted from 12 yards. The hosts were quite clearly giving their all for under-fire Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

But what about his predecessor? Mourinho insisted before the game that he would get a good reception from Old Trafford.

There was indeed some respectful applause as he made his way out of the tunnel before kick-off.

It was easy to play up the idea that United would revel in inflicting defeat upon their former boss given the tension of his final months at Carrington.

There were numerous high-profile spats with players, notably Paul Pogba and Luke Shaw.

However, it all looked to be water under the bridge as Mourinho does still appear to have a good relationship with his old squad.

At full-time, he congratulated each one of them on the pitch.

Upon his arrival at the stadium, he had also been welcomed by staff.

The 56-year-old did, after all, win two major trophies with United, guiding them to the Europa League and the League Cup in his first season.

Much like with Solskjaer, perhaps there remains an acceptance at the club that the manager's hands were somewhat tied and he did ensure an underwhelming side finished as runners-up to Manchester City.

It's unlikely he'll get the same reception from his ex-supporters when Tottenham play Chelsea at home on December 22.
