Leicester City's defensive stats in 2019/20 Premier League season are incredible

Leicester City v Arsenal FC - Premier League

Leicester City’s form in the 2019/20 season is a reminder of why we all love the Premier League.

The Foxes are second in the table, having won 11 of their 15 matches and looking like a team that can certainly finish in the top four.

Leicester’s tally of 35 points through 15 games is more than they had at the same stage in the incredible 2015/16 campaign, which finished with them winning the title.

And while that may not happen again - Liverpool look unstoppable right now, and it’s too early to count Manchester City out - a top four berth certainly looks achievable.

Credit, of course, goes to Brendan Rodgers, who this week signed a contract extension that will keep him at the King Power Stadium until 2025.

The Northern Irishman has established himself as one of the best managers on these shores and convincing him to pen a new deal is fantastic news for the Foxes.

Leicester’s attack, including Jamie Vardy, James Maddison, Ayoze Perez, is extremely hot right now. They have scored just two fewer goals in the league than Liverpool.

However, it’s in defence that Leicester are really playing well.

Rodgers’ side have conceded just nine goals in the league and they rank first in six different defensive categories.

Per Sky Sports, they are first in goals conceded (9), set piece goals conceded (0), clean sheets (7), xG goals against (14.1), shots on target faced per game (2.9) and tackles per game (20.9).

That’s mightily impressive.

Remember, Leicester City sold their best centre-back in Harry Maguire in the summer.

But Caglar Soyuncu has stepped up and has been a revelation in Maguire's absence.

Indeed, Soyuncu’s WhoScored player rating in the league of 7.21 is higher than Maguire’s grade of 6.88.

Soyuncu has been partnered at centre-back by Jonny Evans and they’ve been flanked by one of the best full-back duos in the league in right-back Ricardo Pereira and left-back Ben Chilwell.

Rodgers will be desperate to keep the quartet together for a long time.
