Martial then doubled United’s advantage after catching out Ederson at his near post.

United fans - including Sir Alex Ferguson - were in dreamland at this point. While City haven’t been at their best in the Premier League this season, it was still surprising to see such a confident performance from the Red Devils.

United retained their two-goal advantage after the break, but the second half was unfortunately marred by City fans who threw objects at Fred while the Brazilian midfielder attempted to take a corner.

Fred was left in pain after being struck by an object thrown by a member of the home crowd.

It goes without saying that these incidents are completely unacceptable and City can expect some sort of punishment from the Football Association.

Attacking opposing players - either physically or verbally - is completely out of order.

The reigning champions now find themselves 14 points behind league-leaders Liverpool, who beat Bournemouth 3-0 earlier in the day.

As for United, they jump up to fifth place following back-to-back wins over Spurs and City.
