Cruzeiro are one of the most storied and successful clubs in the history of Brazilian football. They've been champions of Brazil on four occasions, won the Brazilian cup six times, won their state championship 39 times and the Copa Libertadores twice.More than that, they've produced some of the finest players in the history of the national side.1970 World Cup winner Tostao played hundreds of games for Cruzeiro, while Ronaldo began his career at the club. Then the likes of Jairzinho and Rivaldo, also great World Cup winners, turned out for Raposa during their careers.

But despite being such a storied and successful club, Cruzeiro hit a real low on Sunday.

The 2019 Campeonato Brasileiro ended with the club in 18th place - condemning them to the second tier for the first time in their history.

Needless to say, the fans didn't take that very well but while most supporters would perhaps yell at the players and boo, Cruzeiro's fans took it further.

Their game on Saturday was abandoned after 85 minutes - results had confirmed relegation and their fans started to riot.

Chairs were thrown and fireworks were let off, leaving the authorities with little choice.

You can check out footage below:

The police were forced to hit back, utilising tear gas against the fans. It led to horrible scenes, as you can see:

The chaos continued outside of the ground, too, as Cruzeiro supporters clashed with the police:

The scenes are terrible, of course - there's a difference between passion and whatever this is.

Some may draw comparisons with River Plate, whose fans rioted after their first relegation back in 2011.

And much like back then, it's difficult to have sympathy for a club with supporters like this.
