Manchester United lead the Premier League 'Big Six' mini-league so far this season

It’s only December but it seems as though Liverpool already have one hand on the Premier League title.

The Reds have an eight-point advantage at the top of the pile and reigning champions Manchester City are 14 points back.

Leicester City can’t be counted out. Brendan Rodgers’ side are playing some wonderful football right now, and have a chance to reduce the deficit when they host Liverpool on Boxing Day.

Man City’s hopes of making it a hat-trick of titles were dealt a major blow when they lost 2-1 to rivals Manchester United on Saturday.

It’s now hard to picture them clawing back a 14-point deficit to a Liverpool side that is still unbeaten through 16 games.

Guardiola’s team was favoured in the Manchester derby but to their credit, Man United have stepped up in the big games this season.

Indeed, in a mini-league of the Premier League’s ‘Big Six’ teams, the Red Devils lead the way.

Manchester City v Manchester United - Premier League

The Times have created a table of results between the ‘Big Six’ teams so far in the 2019/20 season, with Arsenal being replaced by Leicester.

That’s a controversial move but Arsenal are currently 11th in the Premier League and The Times only include teams “seen as the strongest in the division”.

In five games against their toughest opponents, Man United have collected 13 points.

That’s the same number of points as Liverpool have, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side has a better goal difference.

Meanwhile, Spurs and Chelsea both have just one point from four games against their mini-league rivals.

Check out the table below.

1. Man United | 13 points | +7 GD
2. Liverpool | 13 | +5 GD
3. Leicester City | 4
4. Manchester City | 4
5. Tottenham | 1
6. Chelsea | 1
