Ajax reached the last four of the Champions League last season and were seconds away from playing in the final itself. Had it not been for a 96th-minute goal from Tottenham's Lucas Moura, the Dutch side would have faced Liverpool in Madrid. So close, yet so far. After what was a brilliant campaign in 2018/19, many football fans couldn't wait to see how Ajax would do this year. But, there will be no fairytale run.The Amsterdam side were knocked out of this season's tournament on Tuesday night, finishing third in their group behind Valencia and Chelsea.

Their failure to reach the knockout round has come as quite a shock. Especially to former Ajax star Frenkie de Jong.

The midfielder moved on to Barcelona last summer, but it's clear his former club still holds a very special place in his heart.

His apparent reaction to seeing that Ajax had failed to qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League proves it.

Check out the video below that supposedly shows De Jong at the moment he finds out his former club have been sent home:

Ouch. There will have been plenty of fans sharing his reaction too.

Ajax's failure to qualify for the knockout stage came as quite a shock to everyone last night.

The Dutch champions were top of Group H with 10 points going into to matchday six. But Valencia and Chelsea were level on eight, meaning if both won, they would go through.

Ahead of kickoff, no one expected the La Liga side to go to the Johan Cruijff ArenA and take all three points.

But that's exactly what they did, thanks to a first-half goal from Rodrigo.

Frank Lampard's side also got the job done at home to Lille, meaning Valencia top the group, Chelsea qualify as runners-up and Ajax drop into the Europa League.
